Living With Privilege

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen!

Privilege: (noun) a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group of people.

We are all privileged. Even by definition we are all unbelievably privileged. It’s very easy to look at what we don’t have, or what we are unable to do, or what “rights” and “freedoms” are being taken away from us, or that we have yet to gain. But compared to most of the world, we have plenty of rights and advantages that are only granted to us. And within the “us” there are those that are still more and less privileged than others. Some are born into it. Some have worked their way into it. Some have been fortunate enough to “stumble” into it – which still generally requires work to position oneself and to keep said privilege; but also often requires a few good bounces of the ball.

When all things are considered, privilege is not something that we can pretend we don’t have. It’s just a matter of how privileged are we compared to the next person. What advantages do I have that are available to me (for whatever reason) that are not available to the next person, and why aren’t they available to that person? If in any way, shape, or form, we find that our advantage is not the direct result of our own work (that we would have this advantage without our work, or that we have had it since before our work commenced), and that our counterpart does not – or may never – have it, then our task is to question whether or not it is an injustice. And if we find that it is, it’s my opinion that we should do something to help rectify that injustice.

To quote Dr. Martin Luther King, Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

Our efforts need not be grand, just bold and direct. Maybe it’s a post on social media. Maybe it’s an effort to get involved with an organization, or to volunteer some time. Maybe it’s just being brave enough to discuss the concerns of injustice with the persons in your circle. Be bold. What good is a privilege, if you cannot use it for the benefit of someone else. To whom much is given, much is expected.

Make it a GREAT day!

Stay blessed.
