Music Monday: Off the Charts

Editor’s Note: Please welcome Nate Fritts to the Lacrosse All Stars! This isn’t his first time on the site of course, we had the pleasure of meeting Nate on the Rhino Lacrosse Camp Tour a couple summers back. Nate hales from Portland, Oregon, played at Bowdoin College (NESCAC) in Maine, and now resides in Boston, MA where he researches concussions and brain diseases when he’s not laxing.

With summer well underway, we wanted to up your weekly dosage of music, so we decided to double our music offering to you. Each Monday, Michael Allen will take the morning detail, and Nate Fritts will continue to knock out the night hours. Everybody wins! Check out all the Music Monday posts here!

First off, let me say how excited I am to have a double dose of Music Mondays from here on out on LAS! Welcome Mike Allen, who will be rocking the morning edition of MM while I continue the post-work posts. This is going to allow us to explore the world’s music library even further and transcend through genres, both new and old. Therefore, tonight I thought I’d bring you a few artists who are off the beaten path.

Otis Heat – “Shame”

Let me introduce the Portland-born band Otis Heat, who we were lucky enough to stumble upon via a tip from reader Daniel Veros (thanks Daniel!). Otis Heat is led by singer/bassist/laxer/lax coach Sean O’Neill, who can be found jamming in music halls around Portland as well as coaching high school ball in the spring and summer camps all over the country. We can’t hope for better artists to feature than ones like these – and it gets better! You’ve got to read this Willamette Weekly write-up, which includes how the band was formed by an auto collision:

Tom Thum – Beatbox performance in the Sydney Opera House

When I said we were going off the charts today, I meant it . This one is not even a single song. Rather, it is one of the most mind-blowing solo musical performances I have ever seen. In college, I was the vocal percussionist – or beatboxer – for an a cappella group. That being said, I’ve been watching and listening to beatboxers for years, but never one quite like this. Tom Thum, from the beautiful Brisbane, Australia (shoutout to Straddie Island!), gives an incredible and atypical performance in the Sydney Opera House that not only impresses fans but also triggers a lot of laughs. Hopefully you have 10 minutes to watch this whole video. You will not regret it!
