Throwback Thursday: 1991 UNC – Towson

It’s 1991, you’re in Syracuse, NY at the Carrier Dome, and you’re watching Towson vs UNC on CBS Sports. Yup, back in the early 90s, D1 lacrosse was broadcast on CBS. Talk about mainstream!

Towson was a shocker to make it the Finals while UNC was a heavy favorite and the #1 seed in the tournament. They were 15-0 entering this game. There was a ton of talent on this UNC squad starting with attackman Dennis Goldstein. He scored 4 goals in the semifinal win over Syracuse. Goldstein was joined by John Webster and Steve Speers. Craig Haslinger was a great do it all midfielder, and Joe Bedell and Dan Donnelly could both play with the best of them. Grahamn Harden locked it down on D, and Andy Piazza was in goal.

Glenn Smith had scored 4 goals of his own against Maryland in the other semifinal (which Towson won 15-11). John Blatchley did work on attack, Rob Shek was a stud in the midfield, and Rich Bechter anchored the Tiger defense in goal.

Leif Elsmo brings us the call, and he’s another throwback. In the 80s and 90s, Elsmo was THE lacrosse commentator. Who was his partner a couple years later? Quint Kessenich!

UNC would go on to win the game 18-13, but this 43 minute tape is one that should be studied. Tons of amazing bucket helmets, short shorts, and onset heads… but there is also a ton of great play to watch, and some really pretty goals. Enjoy the old school!
