UMass Takes Out Army 16-9 – Photos & Video

UMass kicked off their season the right way, with a solid 16-9 win over a talented and tough Army squad. The game was played on the turf at Garber Field in Amherst, MA, and the field was lined with snow piles that were often head high. The temperatures were negative in the morning, but warmed to a more suitable mid 30s by game time. Check out the College Lacrosse Video Explosion for more of the week’s action.

Matt Whippen led UMass with five goals and an assist, which is impressive. The fact that he’s a Junior and had never scored a single point in college before this game makes it even more impressive. Andrew Sokol had a hat trick in goals, and assists, and also register six points for the Minutemen. Will Manny only registered one goal, but drew a good amount of attention from the Army defense.

Garrett Thul also drew a lot of attention, but from UMass’ defense, and he registered two points on a goal and an assist. John Glessner was dominant for Army, as he dropped three goals and two assists.

Army and UMass went back and forth in the first quarter, emerging with the game tied at 4. In the 2nd, UMass went on a 3-1 run, to take a 7-5 lead into the half. The third period was UMass’ best, as they pumped in six more goals, while allowing three for Army. The 13-8 lead expanded to the 16-9 final in the fourth quarter, Sam Somers was pulled in net for Army in the middle of the second quarter in favor of Bobby Sincero. Zach Oliveri was solid in net for UMass, making 7 saves in 58 minutes of action.

UMass was better on man up opportunities (3-8 vs 1-7 for Army), Ground Balls (23-15), shots (47-30), turnovers (12 to Army’s 17), face offs (15 to 13 in favor of UM), and even clearing. UMass takes on UNC next, while Army looks to get back on track against Manhattan.
