Lacrosse News And Video Explosion: 2018 Takeover

Welcome to the 2018 Takeover Edition of our weekly Lacrosse News And Video Explosion! Mixed in with all the interesting news stories and random videos of the week, we have a couple of impressive 2018 prospect highlight tapes. I might not be a huge fan of early recruiting, and I’m not sure it pays off like people think it does, but I do enjoy watching a young man play lacrosse above his appropriate level.

On to the lacrosse stories and 2018 videos…

Danowski Wins Howdy Myers For 2nd Straight Year

If you’re named as an outstanding coach in D1 lacrosse two years in a row, you’re clearly doing something right. Duke’s John Danowski has been named the Howdy Myers Award winner for D1 again this year at the IMLCA Convention. If you’re wondering what he’s really like, check out this talk he gave at #LaxCon last year for a glimpse.

Central Texas Lacrosse Is Booming

Coach Aubin is from Austin, has been coaching for 18 years, and has seen the game change rapidly in Central Texas. When Aubin was a player there were four teams total. Now there are TWO DIVISIONS, each with 12+ teams and JV programs. That’s serious growth!

Canada – Hockey or Lacrosse?

Some very interesting numbers in this piece about what Canadians perceive to be their national sport, and where it originates.

Quick Little Lefty Has Game

Ryan Doran is in the class of 2018. He may be undersized, but he goes hard, has quick feet, and a good inside game!

11 Year Old Player Not Liable For Injury

An 11 year old child allegedly hit a 12 year old child with a lacrosse stick in New Jersey and broke the 12 year old’s arm. The 11 year old child was sued but a lower court found in the 11 year old’s favor, and a court of appeal threw out the case when it was brought up. The key here is that the 11 year old was not proved to have acted recklessly. But what if someone DOES act recklessly? Can they still be sued for hurting someone else? Interesting legal precedent being set here.

The court said that in reaching its decision, it was guided by two distinct strands of law: “the cases establishing the liability of adults who intentionally or recklessly injure another person in a sporting activity; and the cases that limit the potential tort liability of minors, depending upon their age and other characteristics.”

Basically, each case still gets its own review, but minors are less liable than adults, in general.

NY Times – More Helmet Coverage

The Old Grey Lady clearly cares about lacrosse and we love that! More coverage of #Helmetgate from the NYT here.

2018 Lefty Attack – Logan McGovern

Another solid lefty attackman in the class of 2018. Logan McGovern plays for Darien High School in CT.

Mary Washington Mourns the Loss of Griffin Burke

Absolute tragedy to see a young life like this cut short. Our thoughts are with the entire MWU program at this time. Great coverage from Lacrosse Magazine.

K18 2014 MLL Highlights

We’ll let this reel speak for itself… we’ll take a break from the high schoolers and go to the pros.

Remembering Canadian Legend JJ Hill

Joseph James “JJ” Hill was 90 years old when he passed away. He was a fixture in the Ontraio lacrosse scene for decades, played professionally, and was also a war hero. From the article, it also seems JJ Hill was one heck of a human being as well.

Quick Canadian 2018 Middie

Dylan McCormick is not a polished player yet, but he is athletic, aggressive, and has choppy quick feet! I love this kid’s hustle and he gets to the goal well… if he starts shooting overhand more and misses the cage less, he could be a terror. Only a 2018, he’s a solid little player to watch!

 6’2″ 2018 Middie To Watch

Greyson Wolfram plays for the Brunswick School in CT, has a 4.0 GPA, stands 6’2″ tall, and is a pretty darn polished player for his age! He shoots the ball well, has good footwork on his dodges, and can use his left hand when needed. Kid looks like a solid lock to be a top level recruit if he keeps up the work.

Big 2017 Pole With Great Stick

It’s not ALL about the 2018s… Kellen Paradine is a 2017 defender who plays for Chaminade on Long Island. He’s a big body, but thin, and has a tremendous set of stick skills on him. He throws good checks, and has good feet, but the real magic is when the ball is in his stick. Fancy!

Little LSM, Big Stick! 2018

JT Lawrence is fun to watch. He’s got an active stick, throws solid checks, picks up GBs, and moves the ball. He’s not the biggest guy on the field, but he gets the job done!

That’s it for this Monday’s Lacrosse News and Video Explosion! Til next week…
