Boston University Sinks Navy in Double OT

Video by GKess Films

Boston University won a huge game at home over the visiting United States Naval Academy, 10-9, in double OT, and this win was just what the Terriers from BU needed to make a real Top 20 push this week. It’s a quality win for the BU squad, and shows us all just how competitive not only the Patriot, but all of NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse conferences have become.

I mean seriously… five years ago, if you had said Boston University would be beating NAVY in men’s lacrosse people would have laughed at you. First off, BU didn’t have a team. But secondly, Navy is regarded as a traditional power program, and for decades power programs did not lose to new teams. PERIOD. Nowadays, you can throw that right out the window, baby and bath water together.

Boston University Men’s Lacrosse is very much here to stay, and from the looks of things, it’s only getting better. BU is now 4-1, with their only loss coming to Hartford. The Hartford loss was a surprise to many, but the Hawks are having an up year in 2016 so far, so keep an eye on them as well. On a side note, the win over Navy was actually BU’s first overtime game ever, and that’s just more evidence showing how young this BU program is, and how far they have come.

Navy came out hot in this game, but they couldn’t put enough goals away to ever really put BU on their heels. A 4-2 lead was the best Navy could do before BU stormed back, and eventually took their own two goal lead at 7-5. Navy scored the next four goals to take back the two goal lead, at 9-7. Just when it looked like things were starting to settle in for Navy, BU’s offense pumped in two goals in less than two minutes, and we were headed for OT!

BU’s keeper, Christian Carson-Bannister came up huge during this BU run. C-B made 10 saves during regulation, and FOUR of those came in the fourth quarter. When OT rolled around, Navy put the pressure on, but C-B made another FIVE saves to keep the Midshipmen off the board, and out of the win column.

Sam Talkow battled for face offs all day, going 8 for 15, but his real heroics came with 47 seconds left in regulation when he scored the game tying goal. James Burr, a freshman, got the game winner in doublt OT, and it was his third goal of the game.

BU has another very winnable game coming up when they travel to Canisius on March 5th, while Navy heads to Bucknell for a tough match up with the Bison. Matt Rees, Navy’s LSM, scored another goal by the way, and that makes three straight games with a goal from Rees. Not bad for an LSM!
