Welcome to the woodshop, everybody. My name is Justin Skaggs. I’m super excited to introduce the limited edition Box Pro BLACK. The Box Pro Black is a Limited Edition Color Series stick of my Box Pro design. There are going to be 10 of these made and will be available at midnight on Thanksgiving. I think I might do this annually as a way to say goodbye to fall and say hello to winter, but I’m not really sure. For now, there will only be 10, and they will only be available while supplies last.
Box Pro Black: WLS Color Series by Justin Skaggs
I’ve always wanted to make a murdered-out Woodie, but I still want to make sure they’re all game-ready and game-functional, so I used a proper wood stain instead of paint, so that it wouldn’t chip off. Now, I’m not a fan of an artificial gut wall, so I wanted to go back and use our dyeing process and create a nice, deep, rich, black gut wall.
We went back through our normal process, but the difference this time was how long we let it sit. I’m super paranoid about how saturated the gut wall is and how long I let it sit so that the color doesn’t become too dark or too light if I were to pull it out, but with the black, we wanted it to be as dark as it could get. It was a little more of a comfortable process than we’re used to.
To complete this color scheme, I handed it off to Rich so he could install this beautiful black pocket as you see here, and put the gut wall structure in. Now, my favorite part about this project is how many different textures are all being represented within the same color. So, you have this nice, glossy frame, and you have a lot of natural materials, and a lot of matte materials, all kind of coexisting in this beautiful crosse.
The last thing I needed to do was put on the Color Series emblem, and my makers mark on the side, but I didn’t want to add a white “W” Tree or anything. I decided just to burn it in and have kind of a natural two-tone look with a different leveling pattern. I’m really happy with how that came out, and I think that put a nice finishing touch to it.
Again, I’m only going to make 10 of these. I might pick it up next year, but if you guys want one of these, they will be available on Thanksgiving. Until next time, take care. Keep LAXin.’
