Colonial Athletic Association: Storylines

Last week, it was the America East conference. This week, ‘Under the Radar’ is diving into the Colonial Athletic Association. If the America East has been NCAA Division I lacrosse’s biggest disappointment so far this season, the CAA (along with the southern) might be its biggest pleasant surprise so far. Sporting a former #1 team and some underrated depth, the CAA deserves your love this week! Here’s out top storylines for the Colonial Athletic Conference heading into the week.

Under the Radar: Colonial Athletic Association Storylines of the Week:

  • Two-bid league? It’s unlikely if Towson wins the CAA, but what happens if Delaware upsets them for the auto-bid? The Hens are a hearty 6-1 so far, with a lockdown defense leading the way. If they go on to win the CAA, we could see a situation in which Towson gets an at-large bid and the CAA sends two teams to nationals, a rarity for the CAA.
  • The battle for G1: In the race for All-Conference honors, the CAA has two goalies that are legitimate All-America candidates. Matt DeLuca, of Delaware, leads the nation in save percentage amongst starters, with 66%, but UMass has their own contender in Sean Sconone (6th, 58%). Both goalies have been lights out, and, though DeLuca leads in save percentage, he’s received more help as well. This is a fun positional battle to watch, especially when these two go head-to-head in each team’s season finale on April 26th.
  • Missing Cat: The Towson Tigers are the face of the CAA right now, and a legitimate contender for a top seeding for nationals. The CAA has seen plenty of playoff bids go to a batch of cats, but it used to be the Hofstra Pride taking those honors. As a routine playoff site and MLL host, Hofstra used to be the pride (pun intended) of the CAA. Their fall has been pretty swift in recent years. In 2019, they’re currently the only CAA program with a losing record. Junior attackman Ryan Tierney, son of head coach Seth Tierney (and grand-nephew of Bill Tierney) is doing what he can, but he’s the only Hofstra player with double-digit points through six games.
