Conference play is really starting to ramp up, which will make for more and more exciting games. There are some great surprises in every single league and in many out of conference games. There is no way to predict who will win each week. That’s technically always true, but this year seems to drive that point home. Everyone is beatable.

The Stat Freaks

You know the deal by now! Each category has a specific range of ridiculousness we’re looking for. It’s just fun to highlight some of the gaudy performances out there, so I do it. Bang.

Freak of the week: That was some good, defense offense, and goalie work by some of these guys, but wow… Albany’s TD Irelan was on a different level this week. Two games, 62 faceoffs, and only 10 losses. 38 of those wins turned into ground balls, and he scored a goal in BOTH games. And he’s a Freshman. Like, he was playing high school lacrosse last year. Wow indeed.

Offense: The Cutoff here is a combined 7 goals and/or assists

Tom Moore – Binghamton: 3G, 4A, 11 Shots vs. Canisius
Chris Walsch – Air Force: 5G, 3A, 10 Shots vs. Bellarmine
Connor Cannizzaro – Denver: 4G, 5A, 11 Shots vs. Georgetown

Griffin Feiner – Hartford: 5G, 2A, 12 Shots vs. Vermont
Connor Fields – Albany (NY): 4G, 4A, 12 Shots vs. Stony Brook

Defense:  For here, you need 8 GBs, CTs, and/or points

Kyle Walsh – VMI: 5GB, 3CT vs. Mt. St. Mary’s
Stephen Petrelli – Binghamton: 6GB, 2CT, 2G, 1A vs. Lafayette

The Big Upsets and Surprises

  • 12 Johns Hopkins vs. Rutgers 6 This game was supposed to be a Friday prime time heavyweight bout. It was not. Rutgers came out flat and Hopkins took control right away. I feel like Rutgers didn’t even touch the ball for 10 minutes. It was a bad showing.
  • 10 Notre Dame vs. Syracuse 11 This game on the other hand was a great game from the first whistle. A true top 5 matchup that lived up to the billing. Syracuse won (by a goal…again), but Notre Dame kept it close the entre time. Seeing these teams meet again for a second or even third time would be a treat if they’re all like this.
  • 10 Bucknell vs. Army 11 Army truly survived this game. Bucknell has been playing spoiler all season long in the Patriot League, and they almost did it again. They had their chances towards the end, but Army pulled off the win. This is shaping into a great seat for the Black Knights.
  • 10 Lehigh vs. Boston U. 6 In other Patriot news, BU is really starting to fade. Lehigh gave them chances at the end, but they just could not force the tempo or mount any sort of comeback. Hopefully the Terriers can turn things around because they were showing some great promise.
  • 11 Stony Brook vs. Albany 19 Albany ran away with this game early. It was supposed to be a good conference test for the Great Danes, but it wasn’t close at all. They are so heavily favored to run away with this conference, it isn’t even funny.
  • 9 Penn State vs. Ohio State 4 This wasn’t a battle of undefeated like it was shaping up to be, but it was still primed for a good game. Penn State used this win to prove their weak schedule wasn’t the reason for their record. They are a good team. Holding Ohio State to 4 goals also answered a big question in many people’s mind: Yes Virginia, there is a defense in State College.

Out-of-Conference Conference Comparison

At this point in the season, this table will not be changing too much. Even a miracle run by any one conference will not move the Big Ten from the top spot. Depending on their league play, they’re in the driver’s seat for getting the most bids to the NCAA tournament. Or, it could be really boring and they send two while the ACC brings 4 or 5 like normal times.

Record % # of Teams
Big Ten 44-8 0.846 6
ACC 26-10 0.722 5
Colonial 28-22 0.560 6
America East 26-22 0.542 7
Big East 24-24 0.500 6
Northeast 25-26 0.490 7
Patriot 20-22 0.476 9
Ivy 18-22 0.450 7
Southern 18-35 0.340 8
MAAC 15-34 0.306 7

Weekend Games to Watch

This week, there are a couple match ups that really have my eye:

BU/Army: Army is still undefeated in the Patriot League play while BU is struggling to find their legs again. Despite their struggles, BU is still one of the Patriot contenders. Army is in control of the league at the moment, so winning this game is very important for them to stay in this spot.

Duke/Notre Dame: Big ACC matchup. No definitive ACC tournament seeds will be determined, but this is still a resume boost for whoever wins. Given that every ACC team will be an at-large NCAA bid, every chance to get a better resume and not be on the road to start the tournament is a must win.

Michigan/Rutgers: Rutgers needs to get back on track and soon. Michigan looked impressive early in the season, but this is still Rutgers’ game to lose. This is a game where Michigan can make a major statement, though.

Providence/Georgetown: Big East Battle! Providence is starting to make some moves in the league while Georgetown was just run out of the stadium. The Hoyas are underperforming in a big way. They can steal this game from the Friars. Providence on the other hand needs to handle everyone on their way to Denver. They need to win the league’s AQ to advance in May no matter what, so getting a better seeding in the league tournament will help to that end.

Delaware/Hofstra: Delaware was the first team to beat Rutgers not long ago and Hofstra is still undefeated. Hofstra and Rutgers are not the same  team, but Delaware knows how to play spoiler. A win here would be another great accomplishment for Bob Shillinglaw in his last year leading the Hens.

Maryland/Penn State: Penn State is the new national number one, leading the Big Ten, and is the hot team in the country. Maryland on the other hand is the reigning consecutive final four champ and has no desire to let Penn State take over as the best team in the conference. If you can watch this game, watch it. If you can’t, find a way to watch it.

Denver/Nova: Villanova is another team a little under the radar. They have a big win over Maryland,  their Bucknell win isn’t too bad, and Brown is OK. A win over Denver would be massive. Denver on the other hand, still has never lost a Big East regular season game. If they don’t show up (which they are liable to do), the Wildcats could steal this one.

Ohio State/Hopkins: Hopkins’ brutal schedule continues. After making light work of Rutgers at home, they now get to travel to Ohio State, who just lost their second game in a row to a top 5 team. This game should be a battle.

UVA/UNC: A loss by Virginia leaves only Duke as a possible ACC win, something they haven’t done in years. This also means they are right on track to wind up in the ACC consolation game. Again. For UNC, a loss drops them below .500 with Syracuse and Notre Dame left. Not a great spot for the reigning champs.
