Lacrosse A Mile High: 2012 Vail Shootout

UPDATE #2: The Men’s and Women’s Elite divisions are all over out in Vail and BOTH of last year’s champs made it back to the finals, but were knocked off this time around. Maverik Elite took down Merrill Lynch 16-10 after a tighter first half, and a lightning delay, and on the Women’s Elite side, Cole Roofing took down Gang Green 13-12.

Kyle Harrison was named the 2012 Keeper Of Lacrosse, while Peter Baum was named offensive MVP. Brian McGill was the defensive MVP, and both he and Baum played for Maverik Elite. Of the 14 All Tourney members, 5 played for Maverik, 4 for ML, 2 for Brine Elite, and one each for Denver CityLax, Jammin’ Salmon, and Rocky Mountain Oysters.

For more on the entire Men’s Elite bracket and tournament, check out the Men’s Elite page over on Vailllacrosse.com. There isn’t a US tourney out there that provides more content and information than Vail. It is truly impressive. And not over yet!

The Super Masters and Grand Masters kick off today, and while yes, these guys are old, they can still ball with the best of them, and some of them would still school many of our college readers! Tim Schurr, Steve Govett, Bill Edell and Brian Silcott are just a few of the guys who play in Vail that could still hang with almost anyone… the older guys are no joke. RESPECT!

The High School division also kicks off today, and for a high school tourney, there is a TON of talent. Teams from all over this great nation as well as the wonderful land of Canada fly in to play at Vail, and when the playoffs hit, it’s some high flying action! The only bummer is that the 6-time champions, the Baltimore Crabs (6 times STRAIGHT by the way), couldn’t make it. Oh well, time to crown a new winner!

UPDATE #1: Jagermeister won the Men’s Masters Division 10-9 in overtime over Adrenaline! Congrats to friends of LAS, Jim Kappler, Marc DiGiovanni, Andy Wasik and Brian Silcott, as well as the entire rest of the Jagermeister Lacrosse crew! Why didn’t I come out and play with you guys!?!? Bad call, Connor. Good call, Jagermeister!

Original Post:

Days 1 and 2 of the 2012 Vail Shootout are in the books. The Masters finals have been set and the Men’s Elite has kicked off with a very strong field of teams. Vail is one of the premier locations for Summer lacrosse, and the area gets 10 great days of lacrosse packed in around the 4th of July weekend.

To say that this is Lacrosse A Mile High is also a bit of a misnomer… because Vail is more than a mile high altitude-wise. Vail actually sits about 8,022 feet above sea level, and if the Air Is Rare at Colorado College, it’s even more precious in Vail. You have to bring skill, toughness and strong legs and lungs to the event, and even then, anything can happen!

Men’s Masters Division ( 30+)

The Masters division is always competitive at Vail… and 2012 is no exception! 2011 defending champs, Hulu, got knocked off by Adrenaline 8-7 in OT in the semifinals on Sunday. Bobby Magin had six goals, including the OT game winner.

Jagermeister beat Olympic Club 12-6 to claim the other spot in the finals. Jagermeister has been led by Marc DiGiovanni (ECSU) and Jim Kappler (former Denver soccer player), and is looking strong. Olympic Club and Hulu will battle for third place today and Silver Oysters and PowerTek will battle it out for fifth place.

Men’s Elite Division

The Elite Division is stacked with talent. Team Harrow and Brine Elite both won big in the early rounds, and face each other today in the Quarterfinals. The other QF match ups are Maverik Elite vs. Denver CityLax/Encore Brand, Merrill Lynch vs, Big Green Herd, and Rocky Mountain Oysters/Lax.com vs. FCA Lacrosse.

Each of the teams above won their first round games by at least 9 goals. Big Green Herd and FCA Lacrosse had to play additional games to make the QFs, and they won 10-7 over One’s Jammin Salmon, and 15-10 over Warrior X, respectively.

All four games should be competitive, and we’ll only know the winners once these contests are over. Predictions would be impossible!

2012 Vail Tournament Field

The Masters ends today, and the Men’s and Women’s Elite is over on July 4th. Supermasters (40+), Grandmasters (50+), and U-19 (for both boys and girls), all kicks off on July 5th and runs through the 8th. There is also a Youth Chumash tourney on July 7th and 8th.
