News And Video Explosion: D1 Upset City, Already!

It’s really only week one of the 2015 lacrosse season and we have already seen a big D1 upset. Actually, we saw a couple of surprising results this past weekend, and we’re here to give you all the news and video that’s fit to print regarding all the action from Saturday and Sunday!

Lacrosse In The News

There is no media poll this week, but I put up my Top 20 poll any way. So did Quint Kessenich. Compare and contrast, because that’s fun! I think you’ll see some serious differences, but that’s a good thing… Navy dominates VMI, Sowell gets 100th win… OSU players working the pro path… Virginia tops Loyola 13-12 in an early top ten match up in Baltimore… Delaware rebounds after opening loss with win over BucknellCuse dominates Siena in season opener… Lehigh players suspended after snowball fight turns into actual fight… recap and photos from Army’s win over UMassPenn State tops Vermont 15-8… Maryland Vs Cornell scrimmage report… Salisbury beats Greensboro 24-1.

D1 Upset: Marquette Beats Lehigh

Marquette earned the biggest win ever for the program when they took down Top 20 Lehigh 10-9 on the road. Not only was this Marquette’s first ever win over a Top 20 team, it was also the programs first ever win on opening day, making this the only undefeated Golden Eagles team ever. Can they keep it up? I put them in my Top 20 for the win, but games against Hofstra and Richmond in the coming weeks will be tough tests.marquette_lehigh_lacrosse_d1_upset

Jordan Greenfield had three goals and two assists in the his debut for Marquette as a senior. Lehigh’s Dan Taylor had the same stats in the loss. Conor Gately and Kyle Whitlow each had three points for Marquette on a goal and two helpers and Jimmy Danaher made 10 big saves in net for MU.

D1 Upset City Rolls On

Boston University beating Mercer isn’t a complete shock, but BU winning 18-6 sure is. BU has clearly come a long way during the offseason. I don’t know if you can call Michigan beating Bellarmine 16-9 an upset, but I’m going to. Have the Wolverines made it around the bend? Are the maize and blue for real? Colgate took down Bryant 9-5, and many people had Bryant as a Top 20 team this year, with Colgate unranked. Detroit bested Ohio State 9-8 in nearby Pontiac, Michigan. OSU is a borderline team to me and I fear they lack depth to truly compete with the better teams, but this Detroit loss raises some other questions. Not to take anything away from Detroit, I just thought OSU would be more consistent early on.

The Crazy World of D2 Lacrosse

Pfeiffer beat Southern Florida 16-15 in what some would call an upset. Others would not. That’s sort of crazy. #1 Limestone beat #15 Lenoir-Rhyne, but the score was 17-16. That’s getting a little more nuts. Tampa beat the #11 team 20-4, then beat unranked Tusculum 14-9. I don’t love comparative scoring, but that’s weird. Of course Florida Tech also struggled with Tusculum, winning 13-11, so maybe the 0-2 Pioneers should be ranked? NDNU lost to MCLA Stanford 12-7… and the Long Island/Upstate/PA crazy train hasn’t even started yet! D2 is going to very interesting this year!
