Alphabetical 2014 NCAA D1 Preview: Towson

The NCAA D1 season is now underway! During the first couple of weeks of lacrosse season we’ll be finishing up the Alphabetical 2014 NCAA D1 Previews! Like last year, we are going through all of the D1 men’s teams for 2014 (there are 67 this year!) and we are now moving on to the Towson Tigers, located in Towson (just outside Baltimore), MD.

Towson went 7-8 in 2012 but turned in a banner year in 2013 by winning the Colonial Conference tournament and finishing up the year with a solid 10-8 record. Ohio State knocked off Towson in the first round of NCAAs. Last year started off rough with three straight losses (one being to High Point 9-7), so 2014 is already off to a better start as the Tigers took down High Point 11-8 on February 8th.

Towson will need to break out the big guns for their next two games as they face in-state opponents, Hopkins and Loyola. Overall, Towson has a relatively strong schedule, and they will have to beat a couple of very good teams (Hop, Loyola, Drexel, UMass, PSU, Penn, etc) to repeat last year’s success.

Tyler White has emerged as the starter in goal, and he played well in the season debut against HPU even though he entered the game with very little college game experience. John Fennessy, Mike Lowe, JoJo Ostrander, and Nick Gorman are the defensive starters right now, and they bring back some experience, which is good, because Towson starts a lot of young players in other positions.

Lots of freshmen saw time at the midfield (like former attackman Ryan Drenner), and others could break into the starting attack unit. While many of the offensive guys are young, Thomas DeNapoli and Max Siskind are proven commodities. I don’t think this group will be lights out early on, but as the season progresses they could really come together, grow, and improve. That makes the Tigers dangerous late in the year.

Conor Pequigney had a solid showing against High Point and should continue to win a good amount of possessions for Towson. If players like Andrew Hodgson and Ben McCarty return Towson will get another kick off experience and talent, and that only makes them more of an NCAA appearance repeat contender. Match ups with Hop and Loyola will truly test their youth, but look for Towson to keep improving and be a different team by season’s end.
