Be A Better Someone

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen!

I read a quote this morning from Coco Chanel. “How many cares one loses when one decides not to be something but to be someone.” There’s an ironic truth to this. All of our lives we are “taught” to become something. We practice to become better athletes; basketball, football, lacrosse, baseball, soccer players. We study to become better students – and ultimately to land a job as a(n)___________________ . We work hard in our jobs so that we can be a good ________________ , or so that we can advance ourselves to become a manager, director, president, CEO, etc. We work at being good parents and good friends. We are constantly looking to become something other than what we are.

But how many of us focus our attention on simply being someone, or a “better” someone? How often are we focused on simply being more alert or more enthusiastic? What if we focused on being more grateful? More selfless? More positive? What if every day, instead of deciding I’m going to be a better athlete, we broke that down and simply said, I’m going to be a more passionate worker. What if our aspirations were centered around our own qualities and characteristics, instead of our our achievements and advancements and acquisitions?

Essentially, that’s the breakdown of our goals, and the acceptance of personal responsibility for their fulfillment. I will become __________________, or reach the level of _____________________, when I develop _____________________. States Plato, “For a man to conquer himself is the first and noblest of all victories.” Einstein, too, made a similar statement. “Try not to be a man of success but rather a man of value.” When our focus is on developing the ourselves with integrity, positivity, persistence (and a host of other qualities), we become valuable to our families, to our friends, to our teams and companies. And as we become more and more valuable, the things – accolades, promotions, and opportunities, will find their way into our lives.

It is better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles. Then the victory is yours. It cannot be taken from you, not by angels or by demons, heaven or hell.” – Buddha

Make it a GREAT day!

Stay blessed.
