Daily Cheese: Chop Wood Carry Water, The St. Thomas Lacrosse Rap Song

An interesting piece of news sent to us by an insider in Minnesota:

A local hip hop group out of St. Paul, MN, called “Snowta” recognized the success and championships of the University of St. Thomas Lacrosse Program and made a song dedicated to the team and their championships.

The song is called “Chop Wood Carry Water” and it comes from a Zen saying that the offensive coordinator Jim Reiley told the team before the St. Thomas vs. St. John’s game. The saying stuck with the team for the remainder of the season. The song is pretty good – sounds a little 80’s like.

SNOWTA – “CHOP WOOD CARRY WATER”

Here’s a little more about the Zen saying “Chop Wood Carry Water”:

‘Before enlightenment, chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood, carry water.’ is a Zen saying that touches on the importance of work. Karmic yoga कर्म योग is one of the four pillars of yoga and means “discipline of action.” It is the principle of doing work for the glory of the Universe rather than expecting a reward. It is no coincidence that these two Eastern practices value the importance of work as a form of service.

A SPECIAL REQUEST

On behalf of the Virginia Lacrosse Alumni Network (VLAN) and the entire Virginia Lacrosse Family, we are writing to you today with an invitation to join us in permanently honoring and celebrating the life of Yeardley Reynolds Love.

We are asking you to help us raise a one-time sum of $500,000, to be directed toward a fully endowed and permanent University of Virginia Women’s Lacrosse scholarship to honor Yeardley, her life and her lasting legacy in the hearts and minds of the Virginia Lacrosse Family.

This scholarship is being sponsored by the Virginia Lacrosse Alumni Network (VLAN) on behalf of the alumni of both the Virginia Women’s and Men’s Lacrosse programs, and will be awarded each year to a deserving young female student-athlete within the University of Virginia Women’s Lacrosse program. The scholarship will be funded in perpetuity once the initial sum is secured.

Mechanically, the monies will be invested in a segregated account within the University of Virginia Endowment, as managed by the University of Virginia Investment Management Company (UVIMCO). The scholarship award will be distributed each year from the Yeardley Reynolds Love Endowed Scholarship separate account to pay for the scholarship costs to the selected and awarded deserving Virginia Women’s Lacrosse student-athlete.

Today there are fifty-two (52) endowed scholarships within the Virginia Athletics Foundation (VAF) scholarship program. The Yeardley Reynolds Love Endowed Scholarship will be the first endowed scholarship within the Virginia Women’s Lacrosse program.

Mr. Lo Davis from the Virginia Athletics Foundation (VAF) will be happy to take your pledge in conjunction with the attached pledge sheet. Lo’s contact details are below:
