UPDATED: NCLL Championship Weekend Open Post – Photos & Scores

UPDATE (from Jimmy Ciccone):

After a very exciting weekend of NCLL action, Navy has been crowned the champions in a 10-9 victory over Rutgers. Rutgers has had a very successful season, and I was ecstatic to see a New Jersey team in the finals. Definitely keep an eye on them next year as I can only imagine that they will be out for revenge next season.  Congrats to the Midshipmen for taking out a tough Rutgers team and taking the trophy back to Annapolis with them!

And although the season is over, there is still exciting news that came from the NCLL a day ago. The site for the NCLL playoffs is already being talked about for the next two years. Here’s the statement that has come from the NCLL website:

“Early indications point to Penn State as host site for the 2012 National Tournament and Rutgers for 2013.  NCLL will select site 2 years ahead.”

Happy Valley to host the 2012 NCLL tournament? Yes, please!  A Nittany Lion team who will already be working hard to set up another chance at the title now has another motivator… home field advantage.

Rutgers hosting in 2013. A team who lost by one goal this  year will be out to win again next year which sets the 2013 season up to either defend a possible 2012 championship win, or another shot at the title on their home field… and that’s very cool too.

This season just ended and I’m already excited for the next season. What were your thoughts on the season? Did the playoff picture unravel as you expected or were you suprised by the results? And what are your thoughts on the choice of tourney sites for the next two years? Good decisions, bad decisions? Let us know what you think in the comments section. Keep it here on LAS and we will continue to update this post with some pics and videos as they become avaliable to us.

Update from Jimmy Ciccone:

These were the sweet 16 match-ups for day 1 of the NCLL Championship weekend.  And after many great games throughout the day, there were only 4 teams left.  The Final Four teams playing were Penn State vs. Rutgers, and Salisbury vs. Navy.

Both match ups were set for 6:30pm and when the final whistles blew it was Rutgers over Penn State with a score of 9 to 7 and Navy over Salisbury with a score of 13 to 7.  All four teams were powerhouses in the league and had a long, tough road to get there.  Penn State and Salisbury can be proud of the seasons they have had, by both playing and defeating many of the top teams in the country this year.

I was able to talk to my friend Rob LeChance (Goalie at Salisbury 2000-2001 and coach with Salisbury’s club team) after their loss to Navy, and he said, “(it was a) tough season. Obviously a disappointment to not make it back to the championship, but overall the boys played well.  Just ran into a strong, well disciplined squad.  Of course it helped that Navy’s goalie played a great game”.

I also checked in with my friend and former teammate Matt Andersen, d-pole for Penn State’s club team. I asked him what his final thoughts of the season were and what his thoughts were for next year and he responded, “We had an awesome season, everyone bonded really well together on and off the field. We won a lot of big games and look to carry that momentum into next season. [Next season,] we are returning all but 4 seniors and will use our loss in the final four as motivation to win the national championship in 2012”.

As for Rutgers and Navy, they still have their biggest came of the year to come. So good luck to both teams and keep it here tomorrow for the conclusion of our NCLL Championship coverage.

BIG shout out to Kevin McGuirl, President of the Rutgers Club team for the photos!  This is a man who loves NCLL lax!
