Vegas Lacrosse Tourney Preview W/ The Salt Shakerz LC

Editor’s Note: The Salt Shakerz Lacrosse Club will be teaming up with LaxAllStars.com to cover the Lax Vegas Lacrosse Tournament, which runs November 12-14. The Shakerz are a post collegiate traveling team originating out of the New York City metro-area who will finish their 2010 tournament slate by making the club’s first appearance at Lax Vegas.

That’s a good looking sideline!

The Salt Shakerz came together in the fall of 2008 when CJ Greene (Villanova University ‘00) and co. began talking about putting a competitive team together in the New York area that would be composed of “good guys” both on and off the field.

The name ‘Salt Shakerz” is derived from the expression; ‘Pass the Salt’—or in Lax vernacular, ‘keep it hot,’ ‘Spin it,’ or ‘one more’. The moniker pays homage to what the club likes to embody: unselfish and tasty play.

The pink, white, blue and tan just works. Nicely done!

It goes without saying that people like to lax with guys they get along with, and that has been the goal of the team since day one. Obviously everyone wants to win, but for this group, no one player has been bigger than the team. That being said, the club still puts together a talented squad. The Salt Shakerz are composed of almost 200 players, including current and former MLL, NLL, and LXM Pro Players- all the way to college club and MCLA guys. The Shakerz rotate players in the various tournaments based on the event and geography (kinda tough for Arizona and Cali members to play in the Lake Placid tournament).

So where have the Salt Shakerz played and how have they fared?

2010 Randall’s Island Tournament-NYC (Champions)

2010 Ocean City Lax Classic (2-2 losing to eventual champs Jack Lingo)

2010 Miami Bump n Grind (3-0 during pool play, lost to eventual champs Stickhead Pro in the playoffs. Finished 3rd)

2010 Laxtoberfest (4-1 during pool play, lost in the semis to eventual champs Washington LC)

Look closely, each name is different. Not bad for a men’s club team!

Like most Lax bros, the Shakerz are all about the Pink… You may have seen the flash of pink Cascade CPXs and Brine King 2 gloves popping up in the last 6 months… that’s us. No, we didn’t rip off Team Hobbit… Pink has been the international symbol for breast cancer awareness for many years, and unfortunately breast cancer has been an issue for some in the Shakerz community. We hope that the brand and the sick looking gear continue to bring awareness to the cause and finding a cure. Not to mention, pink is just cool and looks good on lax bros.

Getting out in force to do some great deeds and look good doing so. Shakerz!

Recently, some of the Shakerz participated in the Avon Breast Cancer Walk, which took place in NYC on October 15, 2010. Additionally, a few of the guys are taking part in the annual Movember/ Mustasche Madness push to bring awareness to Prostate cancer and the Shakerz are also involved in an online drive to generate more funding for cancer research.

The club has benefited from tireless networking (aka quest for the illest gear) and has created some nice relationships with some great companies in and around the lacrosse community. (a Big thank you to Head Case Lacrosse, Gait Lacrosse, New Balance and the various custom apparel outfitters who have helped with building the brand)

Vegas Baby…VEGAS!

The Shakerz have once again put together a competitive team for Vegas.  The roster includes a number of the usual suspects including: Chris Eck from the Boston Cannons, a cast of characters from Siena College, and Chris Schongar from Gait Lacrosse. There’s also some new talent from the west coast that will be making their first appearances with the club, including current members of the Beverly Hills LC.  More importantly, the Shakerz are excited to welcome Jon Namer from Moorpark College, who also will be making his first appearance with the team.  Jon has shown that he’s a ‘gamer’ both on and off the field as he is over 7 years in remission from his fight against cancer.

Just goes to show, you can beat cancer and get back to laxin… Not to belabor the point, but when asked about his situation, Jon simply shrugged it of and said: “Never give up, and continue doing what you love…”—a motto the Shakerz will strive to embody moving forward.

Stay tuned for more updates as the team travels to Sin City
