3rd Annual CityLax Southampton Shootout LaxAllStars.com Highlights + Giveaway Contest

WINNER ANNOUNCED! See below…

On August 20th, 2011, a large group of lacrosse players made their way out to Southampton High School on the East End of Long Island for the 3rd Annual CityLax Southampton Shootout.  LaxAllStars.com teamed up with Warhawk Lacrosse to enter a team in the tourney for the first time, and this was my 3rd time playing in the Shootout.  It was really great to be able to put in an LAS team, and I’d like to thank all the players who came out, especially Joe Barile of Warhawk, for donating sweet jerseys to the team!  PLUS we’re giving away one of the jerseys at the end of the post!CityLax logo new york city lacrosse

The atmosphere was fantastic out in Southampton, and even though we’ve been getting rained on like crazy in the NYC area, the weather held off and we got nothing but sun, temps in low 80s and a nice breeze to keep players cool in between games.  There were a lot of volunteers working the fields and the registration tent, and the event started off very smoothly.

The LAS/Warhawk team was made up of 5 Wesleyan alums (Glenn Adams of Paragon Lacrosse, Chris Meade of LacrosseRecruits.com, Whit Harrison, Ed Yoo and myself), Joe Barile of Warhawk Lacrosse, 3 PSAL graduates (Billy Nguyen, Danny Haylett and Phil Nisbett), Taylor Hennessy, Nick Saputo, PJ White, Brandon Bertone, Willie Neihuis, and Vinnie Ricasio (The Art of Lax!)  We also picked up two free agents, and Mat Levine’s (Citylax founder) son, Joe, hopped on to play with us for a game or two as well.

We went 2-1 on the day beating Real Americans in our first game 8-7 in OT, losing to Jagermeister 9-5 in our second game, and beating The Diablos 11-2 in our third game.  We did really well on face offs thanks to Nick Saputo (Drexel) and Brandon Berton (CW Post), and our offense was led by Chris Meade, Joe Barile, Glenn Adams, Nick Saputo and myself.  Somehow I even managed to score a couple goals… not bad for a converted defenseman!

The charity tournament really serves two major purposes for CityLax: 1) it is a fundraiser, and all monies made go back to supporting lacrosse in New York City public schools.  2) the tournament is a great chance to recruit new volunteers and coaches for fall, winter and summer clinics, as well as the Spring HS season in the City.  Once guys get out for the first time, and see what the event is all about, many are drawn back to CityLax’s mission, and start to donate their time.  It’s great to see the game grow right before your own eyes.

We also got to see a current Frederick Douglass Academy player step in with the big boys, and electrify the crowd.  I don’t know where this kid is going to end up, but if he doesn’t play in college it will be a travesty.  We’ve got a young baller on the field!
