The JuCo Report: Video – BEST Goal Of The Year!

We’ve started the playoff push in the NJCAA ranks. Conference champions are being determined, Regional playoffs will go down, and six teams will be selected to play for the title of the best in JuCo!

If you haven’t been paying attention to NJCAA lacrosse, and want to catch up, check last week’s Report to get up to speed. I focused on who was likely to receive each bid for the six team NJCAA play offs.

If you’d like to see your team featured in the next JuCo Report, send us an email with video, photos, insider information, or tips. Help us power the machine! Just place “JUCO” in the subject line!

I’m going to get RIGHT to the AMAZING stuff. Tony Rossi of CCBC – Essex scores the best goal of the year at any level. Possibly ever. Ok, that might be overkill, but this was just SICK!

Delhi Wins First EVER MVC Championship

Delhi topped Hudson Valley 12-9 to win its first ever Mountain Valley Conference Championship last weekend. HVCC was up 3-1 after the first quarter, and kept a 2 goal margin at the half, up 6-4. Delhi used a 5-0 third period to take a three goal lead into the fourth quarter, where the teams traded 3 goals apiece, for the 12-9 finish.

Both teams had pretty balanced scoring, but the stars of the game had to be the goalies. Any Reilly made 14 saves for HVCC, and Matt Sialliano made 21 saves to get the win for Delhi. David Fernandes had three goals and a helper, while Brendan Caoili had a hat trick for Delhi. Devlin Clarke also registered four points on a goal and three assists. Hudson Valley had five players with two points, and a sixth, Jon Gavitt, had four points on a goal and three assists.

The teams were even on face offs with 12 apiece, HVCC held a small advantage in shots, and Delhi dominated ground balls, 51-28.

Playoff Spotlight On Region 20

The world would be shocked in OCC didn’t win Region 3 East. It’s hard to imagine Genessee not taking Region West, although I’m excited for the Finger Lakes game on April 20th. I’ll talk about Region 15 (Nassau, Suffolk, ASA) next week, as well as Region 19. But right now, we’re headed to Region 20, home to FOUR Top 10 teams.

Harford has the best overall record at 10-3, but Essex is likely the team to beat. Essex’s 9-3 record is nothing to laugh at, and their OOC schedule is legit, with teams like OCC, Nassau, and Genessee on their slate. All were losses this year, but I love a team that goes out and plays the best of the best, and believe it prepares them well for the final push.

Now let’s get back to Harford, who is also 3-0 in region. They played, and lost to, Nassau, like Essex did. Their other two losses were to Suffolk (a very solid team) and Monroe (who is good, but also 5-6).

The GREAT news is that these two teams play TODAY, so we’ll know if my Essex choice for Region 20 is any good almost immediately. A sleeper pick would be Howard, as they have played some tough teams, and lost some tight games to go 5-5 so far. They play Harford on April 20th, and that should be a great game. Anne Arundel is, at least to me, a total anomaly. I never know what they are going to do in a game. That makes them dangerous, and it makes their game with Howard today VERY interesting!

Finger Lakes Continues To Improve

This is the week, FLCC begins to sniff the Top 10. They’re sitting at number 12, unofficially, this week, and have been winning games and gaining respect. Clearly seems to be a program on the rise.

This past week, Finger Lakes topped Herkimer 10-8, and then beat Broome the next day 16-9. A couple days later, FLCC took down Cayuga 19-10 to keep their win streak going, and up their overall record to 10-6. They take on Mercyhurst North East today.

So far, FLCC has played three goalies in many of their games, and has a core of player on offense who are putting the ball away. Robert Pelkey and Scott Timerson stand out as scorers, but there is more balance at FLCC, as Tim Loudon, Parker Weeks, Albert Thompson, Josh Spence, and Dan Johnson are all quite capable.
