The NYC Report: Playoffs Approaching!

Editor’s Note: Welcome to the New York City Report, brought to you by Apple Lacrosse, NYC’s first lacrosse store! Each week Billy Nguyen dives deep into the world of NYC lacrosse and focuses on high school play, college commits, a game of the week, photos, video, and more!

With NYC public school’s spring break vacation over, teams are picking right back up where they left off. Let’s take a look at how teams fared coming off of a long week with minimal practice.

Over break, some teams and players held optional practices and skill sessions. Many players went away to visit schools or get away with family. Those players who stayed in the City took it upon themselves to get together with other schools to hold scrimmages and run drills. New Dorp got together with Jamaica and alumni from both schools worked the kids hard in a pick up game. (Thanks to assistant coach Alfonso Escalante for the tip!)

Midwood JV invited all of NYC via Facebook to come to Brooklyn to play some pick up ball.

Here is a photo of a collection of students from Lehman, Eagle Academy, FDA, and A.P Randolph practicing and then scrimmaging on concrete. No field, no worries! These kids want to have a stick in their hands as often as possible, and this is really pushing the game forward in the Five Boroughs.

Game of the Week

Totenville had a scare last week, barely escaping out of New Dorp with an 8-6 win. Drew Andersen had a strong game netting 4 goals while Michael Catanzaro recorded a hat trick. Nicholas De Meo got a lot of attention but still finished with 2 assists (and 4 GBs), while John Musumeci had 8 saves. Kevin Ottiano led all players with six ground balls. Frank Bakakos stood on his head at times for New Dorp with ten big saves, and New Dorp had three more GBs than Tottenville, but with the loss New Dorp now sits in 2nd place at 8-2.

PSAL Update

Checking back on the PSAL season, Totenville remains undefeated at 10-0 in the Championship Division, and they are looking like the easy favorites to win the A. Meanwhile, Eagle Academy remains undefeated in the Bowl Division at 10-0. Eagle defeated AP Randolph 18-2, and that is their largest margin of victory all year. Eagle was also recently featured on News 12 Brooklyn.

Curtis will take on Lehman today (assuming the rain doesn’t force the cancellation of the game), and these two teams are a lot better then their record shows. Curtis is 5-4 and Lehman is 2-8. Both these teams need this game to gain some momentum to make a late season push, and if Curtis wins, it can be argued that the best three teams in the City are all located on Staten Island.

FDA continues to play a fast brand of lacrosse up in Harlem, and Hunter put up a good fight against the Lions but fell in OT. While FDA should be 8-1 after the win, records on PSAL show that they are 6-3 with 2 wins being taken away from the defending champs. A player on the roster was academically eligible to play according to PSAL’s standards but FDA holds their student athletes to a higher standard, and has forfeited the games.

The player is now ineligible until the next marking period. FDA did the right thing and adjusted those games that he played in and listed those as a forfeit. It’s academics first for high school sports, and I support both FDA (where I volunteer) and the PSAL in their decisions. These schools put academics first! Kudos.

Hunter falls to 4-5 after a tough loss but will look to take down a strong New Dorp team this week. With FDA’s record change, Cardozo now sits on top of the North with an 8-1 record. The Judges are putting together another impressive season, but the big question for them is, can they keep it up come playoff time?

Goal of the Week

Raheem King of FDA scores a between the legs goal that is sure to impress. Flashy and effective. We’ll take it!
