Throwback Thursday: Cuse Vs UNC Lacrosse 1990 Semis

Welcome to another superb Throwback Thursday! This week we’ve got some NCAA D1 semifinal action from 1990! It was UNC taking on Syracuse, and while Cuse had the big guns and names (Maracheck, Paul and Gary Gait, Pat McCabe, Matt Palumb), UNC wasn’t going down without a fight! Or so they thought…

Dennis Goldstein, and Mike Acee led the way down at attack for UNC, Andy Dunkerton took the draws and did the dirty work, and Joe Breschi was a big name down low on defense in front of Tar Heels goalie, Andy Piazza. They matched up well with Cuse, but the Orange were a team on a mission.

This was the 10th all-time meeting between Cuse and UNC and the Orange held a 6-3 all-time lead in the series heading into this game. 6 of the 9 games between the two programs had been decided by 2 goals or less, so we knew we were in for a battle. UNC had lost their last 8 one-goal games heading into this contest.

Cuse ended up winning the game in dominant fashion, 21-10. If you want to see 31 goals from 1990, the above video is for YOU!

Thanks to Lax School for honoring the Old School, the roots of the game, and the greatest lacrosse players the world may have ever known!

Check out more Throwback Thursday action here. We’ve got Jim Brown, MLL Finals from 2001, 1986 NCAA Semifinal and Finals, Early English Lacrosse, lots of 1991 game film, some awesome old school D3 video, and Petro in his heyday. It’s ALL worth a watch and a read!
