USAMLAX Roster Cut to 52 – How My Roster Prediction Fared

US Lacrosse announced today the 52-man roster for the US Men’s National team that will compete in the World Championships next summer in Denver. Originally slated to have 46 players, this first cut keeps 10 attackmen, 13 midfielders, 14 long poles, 7 short-stick defensive midfielders, 4 goalies, and 4 face-off men. The final 23-man roster will be announced after various fall and winter events.

How did my 23-man roster prediction fare compared to this 52-man roster? Of the 23 players I selected to make the final cut, all but three players – midfielder Sam Bradman, short stick defensive midfielder John Ranagan, and goalie Adam Ghitelman – have advanced to the second round of tryouts.

It is interesting to note that while I correctly predicted all the long poles, I did not group them into close defense and long-stick midfield in the same way that Coach Meade and his staff did. In my prediction, I listed Kyle Sweeney and Mike Simon as close defensemen and Jesse Berhnhardt as an LSM; however, those players appear in the opposite positions in the release from US Lacrosse. I don’t believe that this in any way solidifies their positions, though, as many of them can effectively play at both close defense and at long-stick middie.

Only one LXM PRO player, middie Kyle Harrison, and only one current college player, long pole Joe Fletcher (Loyola), were selected. From the MLL, The Chesapeake Bayhawks had the most of any team, with 11 players making the cut.

Here is the full 52-man roster for Team USA, with players from my 23-man prediction underlined. Check out Connor’s take on the team as well.
