Game Photos: Stevens Drops Nazareth 14-12

The Nazareth College Golden Flyers visited Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks this weekend for an NCAA Division 3Empire 8 Conference men’s college lacrosse game, in Hoboken, NJ, which Stevens won 14-12.  The game was tight throughout, as the largest lead in the game was 3, and Naz opened up the scoring early in the game on a man up opportunity.

Stevens - Naz was great!

Both teams scored another man up goal and the game was tied at 2.  Stevens then added 3 more straight goals and amassed their biggest lead of the day.  Naz fought back to tie the game at 5 midway through the second quarter, and again to tie it up at 8 midway through the third, but Stevens would not be denied.  The Ducks were up 11-10 entering the fourth and outscored Naz 3-2 over the final quarter.

More 2nd quarter action...

Stevens is 12-2 this year and looking like a strong contender to win the E8.  The Ducks only losses have come to Tufts and St. John Fisher.  Nazareth is 6-8 with 6 of their 8 losses coming at the hands of top 20 teams.

The Naz D presented new challenges.

For a little more on the game, let’s see what GBHog had to say:

Naz took the air out of the ball and zoned it for most of the game.   Most of Stevens shot differential was taken from another time zone or missed the net due to the extreme wing angle that the zone was giving them.  Naz was very patient, and had good shot selection.   Check the clock in the last picture, to see what I mean.

But for a few untimely turnovers, they had a great chance to win this game to today.   Not sure why they went back to man so early.   Estes had a great game (7 points?) running the O from the wing.   Looked like they took all of their plays that start at the X and flipped the chalk board to run them from the wing.   That threw the Ducks for a while.

Serious shot advantage for Stevens! But were they GOOD shots?

Awesome stuff!  And another near upset.  This was a crazy weekend of college lacrosse, but we got to see a ton of great games, and it seems like there is parity on every level, except the NJCAA.  D3 is looking very exciting and tight and we can’t wait for the playoffs!

Nazareth created nicely from the wing all day.

Does Stevens have what it takes to win up North?  Who is going to play for the D3 National Championship?
