Flour Bluff Lacrosse Club: Year 1 – Not Done Just Yet

Editor’s Note: The Flour Bluff Lacrosse Club in South Texas (Corpus Christi to be precise) is in their first year of existence.  There was almost no established lacrosse within 100 miles but the kids, parents and coaches decided to start a team anyway.  It’s been a tough road, where character has been both tested and built, but they are nearing the completion of their first season, and the light at the end of the tunnel is coming into view.

The Flour Bluff Lacrosse Club’s HS Boys Team will have its last game of the season next Wednesday, 4/20 at 5:30pm at Bill Witt Park.  This has been a great season, with many ups and downs, but in the end, the Inaugural Season was a success, and we here at LaxAllStars.com are beyond proud to have been able to be involved with this group.

Even if you cannot attend this game (because you might not live in Texas), PLEASE help spread the word. These boys have worked hard ALL SEASON, and even in the face of a winless season they keep working, they keep fighting, and they keep trying…  Finishing this season, and successfully creating a team will be an accomplishment that no one will ever take away from them!

Josh Acut – coach, lax messiah, game grower – gives us the inside story below.

______________________________________________________________________________________________

By the time you read this, we will probably only have 7 days left in Flour Bluff Lacrosse Club’s Inaugural season.

3 games, 7 days, and 12 Players Strong… We might get to Lucky 13 for the final game, but as of right now 12sounds a lot cooler.

Yesterday, it really hit me that this season was almost over, and as I go over all the things tht we needed to work on from last weekend’s game versus Reagan Lacrosse (San Antonio), I can’t help but to start thinking about the future.

Will there be a next season??

Then I thought to myself, if I have anything to do with it, there will be. Year One was hard as hell.  We struggled.  Some didn’t make it.  BUT there were a ton of good… No, make that GREAT, things that happened.

Where to start?

The Club is filled with family ties, Austin and Nathan Garcia for one, but then we also have to look at the Schafer’s. Brian Schafer, coach, is one of the originals.  Imagine a younger version of Sgt. Slaughter; football mentality, tough as nails, every ounce of emotion type of coach… BUT add in the fact that his two sons also play on the team, and then you see the passion. Both his sons, Colt and Bryston, play on the team.

Bryston, the youngest, is quiet.  Almost too quiet, but we’ll call him “silent but deadly”!  Yep, the dude doesn’t talk much, but can run faster than anyone else on the team and can LIGHT YOU UP like a lacrosse ball shattering a glass bottle.  I saw it in football, and this guy must have some pent up aggression issues. HAHA!

Then you’ve got Colt, the elder, the Senior, and our goalie. I’ve known his whole family for over a decade, and Colt is definitely one of the reasons why I worked so hard to make this happen. Long story short, he deserved this chance to play lacrosse his Senior year. He put in a ton of time this past Summer trying to grow this Club and support the big picture. He can walk away after this year and say, “my senior year in high school I started a lacrosse team… ”

Colt Schafer with a short stick.

What did you do or what are you going to do during YOUR Senior year of High School? When other Seniors were content with just partying, and just enjoying their last year, Colt is STILL working to build this program.  Much love to the Schafer fam, without them this wouldn’t be possible.

There is so much more to talk about, and as each day counts down, I’ll come up with more.  I feel it is important to recap the road that these kids have paved, but for now we have to focus on the next game!

3 games, 7 days, and 12 Players Strong…. Let’s Go!!!!!

Wait a second…  I almost forgot to talk about this past weekend’s game versus Reagan Lacrosse out of San Antonio!  What can I say, I’m excited!

Reagan is a great squad, and I truly mean that. Now I’m not going to dwell on the fact that we lost to them, or that Doug (Coach) was wearing the ugliest hat that I’ve seen in a while, or even that one of his offensive plays is called PINEAPPLE.  But I AM going to talk about the fact that 4 of his players sent me messages about their lax experiences, what they have found is important in creating better lacrosse players, and conveying their main message; of support.

I’m not going to lie, I think that is it pretty damn cool of them. When was the last time someone from a rival team, and a teenager at that, offered words of wisdom and encouragement to the other team?

So even though the FB LAX Club lost that game, I think this is a clear testament as to how this season is already a triumph.
