Editor’s Note: Please welcome Mark Schindler and the Mercersburg Academy Lacrosse team back to LAS!  Mark is talking about fall lacrosse activities and how the season is JUST around the corner.  If you missed Mark’s last piece on Tennis Ball Lacrosse, you really missed out!

Four of Mercersburg Academy’s varsity lacrosse players participated in the “Fall Frenzy” at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA this past Sunday.
We learned of the showcase thanks to the connection between Dickinson Head Coach Dave Webster and former Dickinson lacrosse All-American, Brian Read (who works in Alumni & Development at Mercersburg). In addition to being a beautiful fall day in PA, the boys who attended the Frenzy played a ton of lacrosse, honed their skills one more time before winter sports begin this week, and enjoyed some grub from Sheetz on the way home (always a boarding school favorite).

The Fall Frenzy at Dickinson is intended to provide an opportunity for some of the best players in Central PA to get exposure to college coaches, as well as showcase their skills and passion for lacrosse. Coach Webster and his staff, as well as Randolph-Macon head coach J.B. Sheridan, guided the 50+ players through a skills combine for about 90 minutes. The position-specific skill work culminated in 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3 to goal and helped the players warm up for the afternoon session. Around noon the coaches divided the boys up into three teams – the Ravens, Steelers, and Eagles – to play a round-robin style series of games. Each game lasted 20 minutes and provided plenty of playing time for the boys.

More fall action at Dickinson.

The Mercersburg players were on the Ravens and, like the real Ravens on Sunday night, won their games. Led by senior goalie Brendan Supple (committed to Le Moyne), the team went undefeated in all 4 of their games.  The other Mercersburg players at the showcase were senior David Bowes (applying ED to Bowdoin), senior Ben Dupont, and sophomore Jack Flanagan.

Fall lacrosse is an important aspect to building a program. Although many lax players participate in other sports, and therefore sometimes we the coaches don’t see them as often as we’d like, it’s a time before the dark/cold of winter to play as much as possible. Once winter comes and the holiday season kicks into gear, it’s sometimes hard to focus the kids’ attention on lacrosse. Then before you know it it’s January, leading into February, and the spring season is right around the corner.

Thus, showcases like the one Dickinson hosted on Sunday are all the more important. They provide a culmination to the fall season in which players can capitalize on all the hard work they’ve put into fall ball. Plus, it’s always best when the players can compete against other talented players.  Sunday felt a lot like a real practice/spring session, and it was great for the boys to be reminded of the speed of the outdoor/full-field game one last time before winter arrives.

Mercersburg will likely be sending a few players to the showcase at York College on December 4th. Coach Schindler and York College Head Coach Brandon Childs played in high school together at St. Paul’s in Baltimore.

Stay tuned for more posts from Mercersburg Academy!
