Kyle Pereira: From Junior Hockey To Pro Lacrosse Prospect

It’s not uncommon for hockey players to excel in multiple sports. Really, it’s almost unusual if they don’t. Whether it’s baseball, basketball, soccer, whatever it may be, hockey players are of a different breed. They have a natural athleticism; compared to hockey, other sports are often easier for them. Welcome to the world of Kyle Pereira.

Pereira had a successful four-year career in the Ontario Hockey League. He split his 231 games with two teams; his first two and a half seasons were with the Brampton Battalion, and he finished off his career with the Guelph Storm.

While Pereira wasn’t the star of either of those teams, not all his contributions were on the ice. He was the 2011-12 recipient of the Roger Neilson Memorial Award, given to the league’s top post-secondary student. At the time, Pereira was taking a variety of courses at the University of Guelph while playing for the Storm…

Sticking With It On A Big Stage

In only six months of playing lacrosse, Boca Raton‘s Ryan Eisenmann has already taken a great liking to the sport.

“I like the agility and that I get to hang out with my friends every game,” said Eisenmann, a member of the Team 22 Lacrosse program based out of Boca Raton. “This is a lot of fun.”

Eisenmann, 9, a fourth-grade student at St. Paul Lutheran School, was on the 9-Under Division team that recently won in its age category at the annual Gold Coast Lacrosse Shootout in Plantation.

The tournament, staged at Plantation Central Park, featured more than 80 teams in 12 divisions from around the state.

The divisions ranged from Under-9 to High School Elite for boys, as well as middle- and high school-age categories for girls. There was also a “Braveheart” mini tournament (2-on-2)…

McGill Wins National Lacrosse Title

The McGill men’s lacrosse team is a national champion, after the Redmen defeated the Western Mustangs 7-6 in double-overtime Sunday in Peterborough to win their first-ever Baggataway Cup.

Co-captain Jishan Sharples, a senior from Vancouver, scored a wrap-around goal with 12 seconds remaining in the second overtime period.

“I was in a one-on-one situation with their defender behind their net and heard Coach (Tim) Murdoch yelling that we had 20 seconds left on the clock,” Sharples said. Sharples. “I turned back around the right side of the crease and took an overhand shot at the top left corner. It was all a blur. Then everyone just went nuts. It just worked out perfectly for us.”

The Redmen overcame a 1-3 deficit and tied the score in the third quarter on goals by Ryan Besse of Aurora, Ont., and Leland de Langley of Orangeville, Ont.. The Redmen fell behind 4-3, then scored three straight in the fourth to lead 6-4 with seven minutes left in the game…
