Music Monday: Mat Kearney and The Mowgli’s

Editor’s Note: Please welcome Nate Fritts to the Lacrosse All Stars! This isn’t his first time on the site of course, we had the pleasure of meeting Nate on the Rhino Lacrosse Camp Tour a couple summers back. Nate hales from Portland, Oregon, played at Bowdoin College (NESCAC) in Maine, and now resides in Boston, MA where he researches concussions and brain diseases when he’s not laxing.

Music Monday is back with Nate Fritts at the helm. Nate will be one of our regulars for the season, keeping us current on the best tunes from around the music world.

Spring is just around the corner and college practices are rolling. What does that mean? Carl, what does that mean? It means the stringers are stringing, the lifters are lifting, and LAS is reviving its Music Mondays to make sure you hit the ground running to start every week. Today, the laxical music wizards are introducing two jams that haven’t been crushing the Billboard Top Charts but may very well top your own.

Mat Kearney – “Ships In The Night”

This artist’s name probably rings a bell with many of you college sports fans, but you may not know why. Singer/songwriter Mat Kearney most recently swept the social media and blog sites with his romantic “Chip Don’t Go” video that blew up during the time of Chip Kelly’s NFL interviews. Kearney, who was born and raised in Eugene, Oregon, serenaded the head coach of the fast-paced Oregon football team and seems to have succeeded in keeping him at home in the Eug. If you were a fan of Mat Kearney before his Chip song, you are lucky. If this is the first time you are hearing of Mat Kearney, you are also lucky, for it would be a shame to wait any longer to hear this guy. “Ships In The Night” is my favorite off of his most recent album, Young Love (2011), and it immediately brought to mind that image of headlights streaming by in the night as you stare out the bus window. This one is sure to get your mind right en route to the game or make that bus ride home after the first road win even more enjoyable.

The Mowgli’s – “San Francisco (Little Daylight Remix)”

The California-based big band The Mowgli’s were just recently put on my map by a number of online music blogs. The best way to describe The Mowgli’s is to say they are an eclectic indie-folk-rock band who pride themselves on an old school meets new school California sound. The original version of “San Francisco” from The Mowgli’s’ Life’s Not Dead EP is worth a listen on its own, but Little Daylight got ahold of this track and spun an already uptempo jam into a more bass-driven, electronic dance (or warm-up) tune that I think laxers from Cali to Mass will feel.

Have some music you think the lax world wants to hear? Drop us a note in the LAS Tipline and let us know!
