The GREAT Life: Attitude, Part 5

Philippians 4:13 – I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Although he’s probably not the first, and certainly won’t be the last, Robert H. Schuller asked the question, “What great thing would you attempt if you knew you could not fail?”

That’s a very powerful question, because the fear of failure is what often keeps us from attempting things. As is often repeated in sermons at my church, FEAR is False Evidence Appearing Real. There’s no reason in the world that we should hold ourselves back from going after the things that we want, simply because we are afraid of what may or may not result.

We’ve got to put on an armor of alacrity, and go after after what we want in a manner that exudes boldness, confidence, and trust in our own God given talents and abilities. If you don’t feel all that confident about your ability to go after what you want, I’ve found two different ways to handle it:

1) Take the steps necessary steps to gain confidence – practice, research, etc.

2) Pretend you are fearLESS! After all, you only have to convince yourSELF. That’s all you need in order to be ready to go after your goals.

Here’s a secret for you…

Every time I step on a stage in front of people, especially kids, I get nervous. It has nothing to do with a fear of speaking. And while I’m not nervous sending these emails out, I put a lot of mental energy into how I say it, or what quotes I choose. It’s often, the most difficult part of my day. Why? Because I have the opportunity to affect somebody’s life.

So what do I do? I let it all go, and pretend that I know what I’m doing!! In other words, I’m trusting that the gifts that God’s given me will take over and shine through. Learn to trust yourself. It’s stated in 2 Timothy 1:7 that “God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.” And as Marianne Williamson noted (see yesterday’s WoW), “we are powerful beyond measure!”

Whether you are stepping onto the field, going after a job, speaking to thousands of people, or sitting behind a desk, go with boldness. Go with confidence. Don’t worry about the scary thing that may or may not be lurking around the corner. Knock out the thing that is in front of you right now, and knock it out like you were born to do so.

“I will persist until I succeed. I was not delivered unto this world in defeat, nor does failure course in my veins. I am not a sheep waiting to be prodded by my shepherd. I am a lion and I refuse to talk, to walk, to sleep with the sheep….The slaughterhouse of failure is not my destiny. I will persist until I succeed.” – Og Mandino

Make it a GREAT weekend!
