Harp Song of the Dane Women – D1 Lacrosse Cartoon

Usually I provide a little breakdown of the college lacrosse cartoons, but this week Jim picked up the intro GB and let fly with an explainer of his own for the Harp Song of the Dane Women! Top cheddar of course. Don’t know what we’re talking about? Read below, and use Google!

Last week it was Goodfellas, now it’s Kipling. We’re keeping you on your referential toes!

Intro from Jim Fenzel:

Mixing in my mind are Kipling’s poem on the call, the urge, the need to go a-Viking, “Harp Song of the Dane Women”, and Oren Lyon’s quote that: “There are two times of the year that stir the blood. In the fall, for the hunt, and now for lacrosse.”

We former players know the call of lacrosse.

Some of us can still play. Some of us try to feed the desire by coaching, refereeing, writing about the game or, perhaps, by drawing mascot cartoons.

Like the Vikings farmers forsaking “woman”, “hearth-fire”, and “home-acre/ To go with the old grey Widow-maker”, so many boys (and girls!) of college lacrosse have no choice in their hearts but to pursue the game. The game that may break their hearts, may leave them battered, injured. Only one team is left victorious on Memorial Day, but now, in April: “when the signs of summer thicken…” there are dozens of teams and scores of players convinced they will hoist that trophy if only they can tear and claw and win now.

So this simple drawing of mascots  climbing into the longship is not meant to be funny or clever, but just a nod to all the young men (and women) playing their damn hearts out because that’s what you do in the spring when lacrosse stirs your blood.

To see more of Jim Fenzel’s excellent work, check out his website. You won’t even have to fight for a spot in a boat. He’s got a coffee mug or two on there you’re going to want to pick up at the very least!

Jim will be back each week with more one-of-a-kind Weekly D1 (and other) Lacrosse Cartoons. Enjoy, and if you see Jim on Twitter, give him some thanks and of course the all important follow.
