Alphabetical 2013 NCAA D1 Preview: Bryant

Our Alphabetical 2013 NCAA D1 Previews continue to roll on, and we’ve covered six teams (Air Force, Albany, Army, Bellarmine, Binghamton, and Brown) so far. Let’s make it seven. We move another spot down the list to Bryant, located in Smithfield, RI.

Bryant really had a great year in 2012, and were closer to the cusp of perfection than many might remember. The Bulldogs went 14-4, and all four of their losses were by 2 goals or less. Three of the losses were by 1 goal, and TWO came in double OT (Fairfield and Yale). Bryant’s biggest win came over Drexel, and they also beat Brown, Albany and Stony Brook.

2013 sees Bryant take on a very similar schedule, and one that will include their Northeast Conference foes, as well as teams like Bucknell, Harvard, Brown, Drexel, and Stony Brook. Over on Laxpower, Mike Pressler was quoted as saying, “We decided to play all 17 of our allotted dates in the spring season, playing one scrimmage and 16 regular-season games. In addition to continuing many of the great rivalry series we’ve created with teams such as Drexel, Brown and Albany over the past four years, this season’s slate will include two highly ranked newcomers in Bucknell and Harvard.

With a NEC AQ now on the line, and Bryant taking the title last year, one has to like the Bulldog’s chances of making an NCAA appearance this year. Their returning talent doesn’t hurt either! Peter McMahon and Nils Thompson return as captains for the Bulldogs, and are joined by Ben Sternberg, a local RI product, to help lead the way.

Other players to watch for Bryant this year will be last year’s leading scorer, Colin Dunster, face off man Kevin Massa, Tewaaraton level baller, Mason Poli, and defender Glenn Maiorano.

The big question for Bryant is now that the NEC gets an AQ and truly matters, can they still win it? Mike Pressler will have these guys pumped and ready to rock yet again, so while I can’t make any guarantees, at this point, Bryant has to be an early NCAA favorite.
