Alphabetical 2013 NCAA D1 Preview: Stony Brook

We’re breaking down each and every NCAA D1 team one by one to get prepped for the rapidly approaching season. Welcome back to the Alphabetical 2013 NCAA D1 Previews! We move another spot down the list and the Stony Brook Seawolves, located in Stony Brook, NY, are up for Preview!

The Seawolves went 7-10 in 2012, which was a definite step back from the previous seven seasons, where SBU went .500 or better each year. Losses to Fairfield and Virginia were followed by another loss, 10-9, to Marist. A 7-6 win over Delaware showed promise, but four straight losses to St. John’s, Towson, Siena, and Bryant (all by two goals or less) created a sense of urgency. Stony Brook went on an impressive 6-3 run to close out their season, and two of their losses were in OT, and two were to top Top 20 teams.

2013 sees the Seawolves take on a similarly tough schedule, with a couple of changes. No more Hopkins, but Maryland steps in to fill the void. SBU plays in the America East, and they will also face Fairfield, Lafayette, Marist, Virginia, St. John’s, Rutgers, Siena, Sacred Heart, Bryant, and Yale. That’s sixteen games for the team with the best mascot in all of D1. Seawolves. I just love that, even though I don’t know what it is.

Stony Brook brings back some talent on O, and two 40+ point scorers in Mike Rooney and Jeff Tundo. Cole Milican also returns in the midfield, and will be counted on for increased production this year. SBU is a little thin at attack, and could likely start at least one freshman at the position. When it comes to midfielders, SBU will definitely need new guys to step in, aside from Tundo and Milican. Challen Rogers, a tall and highly touted Canadian, seems like a great candidate to bring some scoring punch immediately.

In goal, SBU may have some issues. With only two keepers on their roster, they are in need of someone solid at the very least, and both guys are sophomores or younger. Pat McGushkin played 9 minutes last year. Dan Shaughnessy is a freshman from L-S in Massachusetts. Bryan Judge, Dominic Cerasi, Alex Harris, JJ Laforet, and Devin Feeney all return on D for SBU, and that’s a ton of proven experience.

When it comes to poles, I expect SBU to be just fine, and possibly improved. JJ Laforet can do it all at LSM, and if he can improve on his face off percentage, he could be a huge difference maker for the Seawolves. With Savaughn Greene returning to SBU’s roster this year after a redshirt year in 2012, their Defense should be extremely impressive.

Stony Brook has some scoring punch, and an experienced defense, which should help them early. If they can find a consistent presence between the pipes, they have potential for a winning season. A couple of younger players stepping up on O, and this team could be back to the 10-4 style of season we’ve become accustomed to.
