Australia Sharks make waves in Denver

A full member of the FIL since 1972, the Australia men’s national team has placed 2nd in the World Lacrosse Championships four times (1967, 1974, 1982, 1994) and 3rd seven times (1978, 1986, 1990, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010). This year, the Sharks showed up with a mix of youthfulness and experience, backed by a massive defensive unit.

Australia - 2014 World Championships Opening Ceremony
These guys know how to pack for global travel. Best hotel pool toy ever.

For example, on the defensive side of the field alone, there’s a wide age range amongst longpoles. From 23 year old Callum Robinson (No. 2, Stevenson Univ.) to 40 year old, Keith Nyberg (No. 10, Eltham). The well-oiled Aussie defensive unit has shined in key moments against the Iroquois Nationals, Team USA, and most recently Israel, exiting with a close 9-8 quarterfinal victory.

Led by coach Glenn Meredith, the 2014 Australia Sharks squad has proven that it can be just as threatening and vicious as previous Aussie teams in years past. The team and its loyal fans seem to have been building momentum all week long.

Today, the Sharks will face the US Men’s National Team at 4:30pm at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Denver, Colorado, in a semifinal matchup that will require 110% effort from players on both sides of the ball all game long.

Australia versus Team USA will also air live on ESPNU. For a full broadcast schedule of this week’s games, please visit WorldLacrosse2014.com.
