Wednesday NCAA Tournament Action Recap

Yesterday, the NCAA tournament kicked off with play-in games for the D1 bracket, and first round action going down in men’s D3 lacrosse. We’ll run down the results, provide video where we can, and talk about the big match ups in the next round.

NCAA D1 Play-In Games

Air Force Tops Richmond – Air Force took it to Richmond, and won 13-5 in this play-in game. This was Air Force’s first ever tourney win, and they will play Duke on Sunday in the next round. Mike Crampton led the way for the Falcons with four goals and a helper. Brett Dadiego had 8 saves in the first half, and only allowed one goal, to give Air Force a solid early lead by the end of the second quarter.

Bryant Tops Siena – Bryant, like Air Force, earned their first ever NCAA win with a 9-8 decision over Siena. Bryant will face Syracuse in the next round, in a rematch of last year’s thrilling Cuse NCAA win. Bryant’s 15 wins are a school record. Shane Morrell scored the game winner on a pass from JK Poirier. Gunnar Waldt made 14 huge saves in net for Bryant, and the face off battle between Casey Down (Siena) and Kevin Massa (Bryant) was a definite highlight of the contest.

NCAA D3 First Round Games

Ithaca Cruises By Montclair State – IC took it to Montclair state, winning 13-4. Ithaca held MSU scoreless for 40 minutes during one span of the game. MSU went up 4-2, but Ithaca scored 11 straight to take the W. James Manilla had five assists, and also scored a goal. Ithaca’s next game is at RIT. RIT’s last loss came in the title game last year to Stevenson.

Amherst Wins Battle With Colorado College – Amherst got a win against Colorado College, and this game was relatively tight, with the Lord Jeffs winning 13-10. Devin Acton had a huge day with 6 goals and Quinn Moroney had a hat trick of goals and assists for six total points. Amherst played 2 goalies, who made 9 saves on the day. Chase Murphy made 16 big saves for Colorado College.

Union Destroys New England College – Union will host Amherst in the next round after dominating NEC 24-4. Union is now 8-0 at home, and the 24 goals is a season high for the Dutchmen. 16 different players scored for Union, and the team was up 14-2 at the half.

Cortland 20, Keuka 6 – Keuka’s undefeated season came to an end at the hands of Cortland, who will play Springfield in the next round.  This win was the program’s 600th win ever, and a huge milestone. Cortland had 3 players with 4 points, and neither goalie that saw time was tested much. Keuka finished good opportunities, but Cortland had way too much depth, as 15 players notched at least one point.

Springfield 19, WNEU 13 – Ryon Lynch had four goals and three assists to lead SC over WNEU in a crosstown rivalry game with even bigger implications. SC plays Cortland next. 2500 fans saw Springfield get the win, and Bryce Serriello had six points on 4 goals and 2 helpers. Connor Nash made 12 saves for the win in net.

Endicott Survives Keene State – The Endicott Power Gulls (they will forever be the Power Gulls to me) topped a tough Keene State team, 13-10, at home on Wednesday. Endicott will travel to Tufts for an in-state battle in the next round. Endicott had three players register four points, but their biggest strength was their man-down defense, which stopped all seven Keene State opportunities.

Tufts Cruises by Emmanuel – Tufts registered a resound 24-2 win over Emmanuel College in the first round. I’ll let the video speak for itself. It’s not up yet, but check out JumbosLaxTV on YouTube, because it will be up shortly. To help you pass the time, here are highlights of Tufts’ NESCAC Title Game win over Amherst:

York 8, Susquehanna 3 – Not only did York set a new record for wins (16) in a season, besting their previous mark of 15 (also set this year), but the Spartans also earned their first-ever NCAA tourney win. That’s huge! York will play Salisbury in the next round. Tyler Hutson scored the first two goals of the game for York, James Lowe had three assists, and Caleb Abney had 9 saves in net, while only allowing 3 goals against.

Aurora Goes Back To Sweet 16 – Aurora took down Adrian 22-13, and will be making their second consecutive trip to the Sweet 16. Not bad for a relatively new program! Not bad at all… Max Obrlecht scored the first goal of the game, and then added four MORE goals, to go along with 6 assists. 11 points? Ok! The game was tight at the half, with Aurora leading 8-5. Kylor Berkman’s squad travels to Denison this weekend for their next game.

Denison Thumps Centre College – As mentioned above, Aurora will travel to Denison for the next round, and Denison comes off a 19-4 throttling of Centre. Three players had hat tricks for Denison, and Eddie Villa had 5 assists. Vita also had 2 goals of his own early on in the game. Eric Baumgardner scooped up 11 ground balls, and no, he doesn’t play goalie.

WAC glides by Eastern – Washington College took a 13-6 win over Eastern to the bank and cashed it. WAC was up 4-3 at the half, but won the second 30 minutes 9-3 to take the W. Sid Looney had four goals and Hunter Nowicki had four assists and 2 goals for 6 points to lead WAC. WAC plays Lynchburg in the next round.

Lynchburg Crushes Sewanee – The Hornets showed little to no mercy, and took down visiting Sewanee 25-4. A 10-0 first quarter put the game away early. An 8-3 second quarter only reinforced this fact. Todd Galvin had six goals and three assists, and at least three other Hornet players had big nights when it came to point totals.

Carbini Beats Mary Washington In A Thriller! – The 9-8 Cabrini win over MWU may have been the most exciting first round game in all of D3. MWU started out hot, and went up 4-0. Then they hit a rough patch of scoring, and Cabrini rallied to tie it at 4 goals apiece. Cabrini would continue to score, and go up 6-4 at halftime. The score moved to 7-5 in the third, and at 9-6, it looked like the Cavaliers were safe. From the 3:15 mark to the 2:30 mark, MWU notched 2 goals, and then got the ball back, looking to even the score at 9s, but Cabrini generated a key turnover, and ran out the clock. The win was Head Coach Steve Colfer’s 200th at Carbini.

Stevenson Dominates Otterbein – An 18-4 win is fine, just fine, but the Mustangs will face a tougher opponent in Cabrini in the next round. Tony Rossi went off for five goals seven total points. The last time Rossi had seven points, it was against Cabrini. Weird? The Mustangs are now 8-0 all-time at home in NCAA playoff games. Dmitri Pecunes had 8 saves in net for SU.
