Yinzers At The Next Level

Welcome to a weekly series that will track the progress of Pittsburgh athletes at the next level… playing college lacrosse! As Pittsburgh has improved over time, the area has produced more and more high level talent. We are now at the point where tracking Pittsburgh players in college should be a thing. And now it is.

NCAA D1

Boston – Red shirt freshman Patrick Donnelly (Mt. Lebanon) registered his first career goal in a 10-7 loss to Providence on February 22nd. Donnelly comes from Boston after transferring from Penn State. He is receiving regular playing time for the Terriers.

Marquette – Freshman Andy DeMichiei (Hampton) tallied an assist in a 9-8 loss to Jacksonville, 20-9 loss to Duke, and a 15-10 win over Detroit. DeMichiei has recorded an assist in each of the last four games. Of the 2013 WPIAL All Americans, he is making the biggest impact at the next level and will also be the hardest to replace.

Robert Morris – Senior Brian Bohn (Seneca Valley) made 7 saves in an 11-8 loss to St. Joseph’s, 11 saves in a 10-9 win over Siena, and 10 saves a 8-6 loss to Hobart.

NCAA D2

Mercyhurst – Senior Jake McAndrew (Seneca Valley) scored twice and added an assist in a 10-7 loss to Seton Hill. Stats for their loss against Queens have not been posted yet.

Seton Hill – Senior Jimmy Cogley (Peters Township) went 7 of 14 from the X and assisted on one goal in a 10-7 win over Hurst. Cogley has 2 goals and 1 assist on the season. Senior Lee Carrozza (North Allegheny), sophomore Anthony Peluso (North Allegheny), and freshman Zach Rusch (Bethel Park) also saw action against Hurst.

Cogley had 2 goals in a 13-7 loss to Limestone. He struggled at the face off X going 2-10.

NCAA D3

Baldwin Wallace – Freshman Luke Happel (Hampton) tallied a goal in a 19-2 win over Houghton and one goal in a 12-10 win over Olivet. Happel had scored at least once in his first three collegiate games before going scoreless in a 13-7 loss for Hanover.

Denison – Freshman Will Nabors (Mt. Lebanon) made his collegiate debut against Hope registering 1 save in the final 15 minutes. Junior close defender Drew Newman (Upper St. Clair) collected two ground balls and forced a turnover in  the Big Red’s 19-17 win over Stevens.

DePauw – Freshman Ryan Mauro (North Allegheny) scored 2 goals, his first and second points as a collegiate, in a 8-6 win over Hope.

Dickinson – Senior Max Pawk (Sewickley) made 9 saves in a losing effort to Roanoke. After a 2-3 record, Pawk was replaced by sophomore Nick Baxter.

Elizabethtown – Freshman Luke Stephens (Franklin Regional) has appeared in 4 games collecting 10 groundballs and causing 4 turnovers. Stephens was a 2013 High School All American.

Gettysburg – Junior Bijan Firouzan (Mt. Lebanon) scored once in a loss to Lynchburg and added 3 goals in a 21-4 win over Eastern. He has 8 goals and 2 assists for the 3-3 Bullets.

St. Lawrence – Senior Connor Behun (Sewickley) scored his first goal of the year in a 15-4 win over Babson.

St. Mary’s – Freshman LSM Max Happel (Hampton), brother of Luke, has appeared in one game this season. The Happel brothers have a sister who plays at St. Francis.

St. Vincent – Junior attackman Tim Oxenreiter (Central Catholic) has 2 goals and 4 assists through 6 games for the Bearcats.

Washington & Jefferson – Senior Casey Smallwood (Pine Richland) scored 2 goals and junior John Bursch (Greensburg Central Catholic) tallied 4 assists but W&J lost to John Carrol1 12-9. Smallwood added 2 goals against Franciscan and 1 goal and 3 assists against Drew. Bursch had 2 goals and 1 assist against Franciscan. W&J dispatched Franciscan 19-4, but were defeated by Drew 12-6.

Additional Yinzer News:

Both WPIAL D1 and D2 finals will be at Highmark Stadium this year. The semifinals may or may not be there. More on that as it develops.

Sewickley LSM Barret Fowkes has committed to Beloit per Top Lax Recruits.

Upper Arlington topped Mt. Lebanon and Seneca Valley in scrimmage action this past weekend.

Shadyside is in Florida this week for Spring Break.

Hampton scrimmages North Hills tonight.
