Alphabetical 2013 NCAA D1 Preview: Marist

We’re breaking down each and every NCAA D1 team one by one to get prepped for the rapidly approaching season. Welcome back to the Alphabetical 2013 NCAA D1 Previews! We move another spot down the list and the Marist Red Foxes, located in Poughkeepsie, NY, are up for Preview!

Marist went 6-8 in 2012, which was their worst record since 2009. The Red Foxes had been on a bit of an uptick! In 2012, they weren’t sneaking up on anyone, and played a lot of tight games, sometimes with some excellent teams! The Red Foxes lost to Maryland big (17-4), but were one goal away from Duke (11-10). They went 1-2 in OT, and 4-6 in games decided by 2 goals or less. Like I said, this team has been on an uptick, and they were right there up until the end.

In 2013, Marist plays their MAAC schedule, and will once again play Stony Brook, Sacred Heart, Lafayette, Duke, and St. Joseph’s. They have also added Towson and Delaware.

To help the offense along in those tight games this year, Marist returns all three players who eclipsed the 20 point mark last year in Jack Doherty, Connor Rice, and Drew Nesmith. Colin Joka, Brett Bernardo, Jim Marks, Aeden Herman, and Mike Begley also return, meaning Marist has some serious depth and experience this year on at least one side of the field.

On the defensive side of the ball, Marist loses a couple of guys, but there is still a really solid core in place. Craig Goodermote is on the smaller side, but he can stop the ball, and he is back for another year in goal. He is joined by defensemen TJ McDermott and Ethan Fox, who were regulars last year, as well as another Senior in Brennan Brunelle, who could see more time in his final year. Basically, they look solid! Add in the fact that Matt Dugan is in his Senior year as a Face off midfielder, and Marist might be able to win a couple of those big OOC games!

The Red Foxes seem to have depth and experience, along with some good talent. They look like a team that should be very competitive in the MAAC, and could make a serious run at conference championship this year.
