Alphabetical 2013 NCAA D1 Preview: Siena

We’re breaking down each and every NCAA D1 team one by one to get prepped for the rapidly approaching season. Welcome back to the Alphabetical 2013 NCAA D1 Previews! We move another spot down the list and the Siena Saints, located in Loudonville, NY, are up for Preview!

Siena went 11-5 in 2012, and looked good to make the NCAAs again, until they were upset by Canisius, 10-9, in the MAAC finals. Siena lost games to Hopkins, St. John’s, and Binghamton early on, and then went on a serious run where they put together 8 straight wins, scoring at least 12 goals in each contest. They lost 14-13 to Albany, beat Manhattan and Marist, and then lost to Canisius to end their year.

2013 sees Siena play a similar schedule, and their biggest addition has to be their game with Cornell on March 26th. Siena’s NCAA hopes still hang on winning the MAAC, and they will be looking for revenge after being unseated for the AQ last year.

Bryan Neufeld is gone from the Saints’ attack, but Danny Martinsen and Colin Clive both return, and bring 62 points, and 37 points back with them, respectively. Connor Prunty and Nate Barry also add some returning talent and experience, but Siena could definitely use some of their younger middies to step up and produce this year. There are 16 Mids on their roster, and hopefully this translates into depth and enough two-way players to compete.

Tom Morr is gone from in between the pipes, but Siena has SIX goalies on their roster, so the potential to find a replacement is there. If worse goes to worst, they can always rotate keepers and keep their opposition on their toes. That’s an awful plan. Siena needs a goalie. Thankfully, Erik Casparius, Brendan Meehan, and Pat Killeen all return on defense, with only Ken Wright graduating. Siena is loaded up with poles as they have 15 on their roster.

Obviously, Siena needs to find a solution in net. That is a glaring concern. Other than that one sticking point, Siena’s success will come down to whether or they not they can create at least two good lines of middies, who can play D and move the ball on O. If they can do that, they will stay at or near the top of the MAAC. If not, it could be a long season.
