NYC Mayor’s Cup Lacrosse Invitational Presented By Nike: April 9th & 10th

The New York City Mayor’s Cup Lacrosse Invitational presented by Nike will be taking place on April 9th and 10th at Randall’s Island, in the City of New York.  Around 40 teams from all over the Five Boroughs (and beyond!  LI and Westchester represent!) will head out to the fields for 30-minute lacrosse contests in a jamboree style environment.

It’s a great chance for kids from all over the City to come out, compete, have fun, and see each other play.  The value of these kids all seeing each other play lacrosse in a place where the game was not exactly common only 5 years ago can not be underestimated.  It is a great way to kick off the season.

Trinity and Fordham Prep did some serious battling in 2010.

The number of teams alone is impressive, and the fact that an event like this can be organized at all in a city as large as New York speaks to the organizational capability of the New York City Sports Commission, which runs the event in a partnership with Citylax.  Nike is once again the title sponsor of the Invitational, and in conjunction with STX, they have provided a great amount of help and support.  An event like this would be nearly impossible without the support of the City, and this really sets an example for other urban areas on how to support local athletics.

On Saturday the girls will play their games, and on Sunday, the boys take the field.  The games run from 9am to 5pm and will all be played on Randall’s Island, located between Manhattan and Queens.  Randall’s Island is host to tens of fields and is a great place for the athletically inclined in NYC to get out and play.  The Salt Shakers will be hosting their first tournament there this Summer, June 25th and 26th.

Good sportsmanship is KEY!

I have volunteered for the past two years at the Mayor’s Cup, and this Sunday will be my third in a row.  I’m very excited to get the opportunity to help out at an event like this and truly believe it is a testament to the growth of the sport, Citylax’s mission of growing lacrosse in the City, and the NYC Sports Commission’s ability to get things done and bring great events like this to the residents of their city.
