UVA Goalie Matt Barrett suspended entire 2017 season

On Friday evening University of Virginia head coach Lars Tiffany announced he’d suspended goalie Matt Barrett for the entire the 2017 men’s lacrosse season because of a “violation of athletics department policy.” Barrett, once listed as the no. 1 goalie in the country by Inside Lacrosse, will now ride the pine his entire senior season without any chance of setting foot on the field. Previously, he’d started in all 46 Virginia games he’d played in!

Matt Barrett got arrested in August

Just twelve weeks ago, UVA-centered sports blog Streaking The Lawn reported that Matt Barrett was arrested for drug possession during the weekend of the Ocean City Lacrosse Tournament. While the University of Virginia’s recent announcement did not directly link the arrest to Barrett’s suspension, it’s likely safe to say the incident was a major red flag. Rumors swirled that he’d already been suspended by the time he was released from jail.

A 2nd team NCAA All-America selection in 2015, Barrettcurrently ranked No. 9 in UVA history for total career saves at 469. Here are just a few of the accolades Barrett earned in high school at Malvern Prep as well:

  • Listed as the No. 25 recruit in the country by Inside Lacrosse
  • Listed as the No. 1 incoming goalie in the country by Inside Lacrosse
  • Under Armour All-American
  • US Lacrosse All-American
