Nassau Wins, OCC Loses – The JuCo Report

When Nassau wins and OCC loses, it’s a big deal!

Nassau Wins, OCC Loses

Let’s start with the biggest NJCAA men’s lacrosse news for the week…

Heading into last Saturday’s tilt, Onondaga had won 107 straight games, with a bunch of those Ws coming at the expense of the NCC Lions. Titles, records, and dynasty status have all been achieved. Yahtzee! But this game was THIS GAME, and none of the other 107 games mattered.

While OCC raced out to a big 1st quarter lead, Nassau fought back and was within one at the half, 5-4. The second half was a flipped image of the first as Nassau came out hot, scoring 5 straight, and going up 9-5. OCC rallied, tied the game at 9, and almost took the lead back, but Nassau weathered the storm, and put away the game winner with 15 seconds left, to come away with the biggest 10-9 win in NJCAA history.

Did you catch the highlights this weekend on LaxSportsNetwork.com? It was a GREAT game!

Nassau just beat a team that hadn’t lost in 107 games… so, yes, it really is the biggest 10-9 win ever, and it’s only March. Congrats to Nassau on the win, and congrats to OCC on the 107 game streak. It’s still incredible. These teams have played some unreal games, especially for the national title. You can always watch those HERE and HERE.

NEW #1 In NJCAA Poll!

I’ve never done a JuCo Report where Onondaga wasn’t the top team. There’s a first time for everything! The poll shows rank, team names, votes received in parentheses, record, last week’s results, and last week’s poll placement. That’s a lot of info in a tight space, but it gets you caught up quick.

Not many NJCAA teams do this, so it’s rare to get an inside look at any program, and Dean has some fun with it, as you can see:

Good stuff Bulldogs!

NJCAA Trends & Looking Forward

Genesee’s Schedule… Oh, my! – In their home of Region 3, Genesee plays #9 Monroe, #10 Finger Lakes, AND #2 Onondaga. That’s a solid slate of Top 10 match ups already, but Genesee adds #1 Nassau, #6 Anne Arundel, AND #3 Essex to their conference games, and all of a sudden they play 6 games against Top 10 teams out of their total 14 games. That’s a tough road, but props to Genny for scheduling such a good out of conference set of games.

Some Impressive Stats – Through six games, Mark Swintek of Union County has 28 points on 9 goals and 19 assists. 3 helpers per game ain’t bad! Harford’s Max Mullin has 27 points in only 5 games, and he is averaging just above a hat trick per game. Howard’s Scott Dagnanleach has only played 3 games, but that hasn’t stopped the middie from putting up 18 points, for an average of six per game. Jacob Bomberry at Genesee has 16 points in only 3 games, so he’s right up there with SD! Matt Bennett has 14 points in 3 games for OCC, with 10 assists to lead the way for the Lazers.

You know what’s crazy? –  Nassau has played FIVE games and their top scorer only has 13 points! Considering they have scored almost 90 goals so far, that’s kind of amazing, and it means NCC has PLENTY of weapons and kids who can get it done. That only makes them more scary, doesn’t it?

Ground Ball KING – Right now, Matt Axmann is the undisputed leader of the GB category. He has 83 face off wins in six games, and 83 ground balls. Union County has also gotten 9 goals and a helper from Axmann, AND he plays man up. The next closest gb total is 33 in 5 games. That’s 50 fewer ground balls in one less game. Thats crazy stuff right there.

I’ll be back next week with more from the world of NJCAA men’s lacrosse. With OCC clearly beatable, this season just got a LOT more interesting!
