Courage Game Set To Promote Equality Amongst Athletes In New England

Editor’s note: We are pleased to share the following news release about the New England Courage Game on September 23 with the worldwide lacrosse community. It was originally published on CourageGame.org. Courage Game is a proud partner of LaxAllStars.

BOSTON, Tuesday, August 8 – The Courage Game, a 501(c)3 charitable organization supporting awareness for LGBT equality, is pleased to announce its next event, a Speed Lacrosse tournament, in New England on Saturday, September 23, 2017. The Game welcomes players of all ages, gender, races, and orientations to participate in a day of lacrosse celebrating inclusion and equality for all.

Held at Joe Moakley Park, a beautiful waterfront park next to Carson Beach in South Boston, the tournament is designed to facilitate quick decision-making, active communication and teamwork. Teams each with a total of five players will be split up amongst youth (U7-U13), high school, college, and adult (U30, U40, 50+) age divisions.

Speed Lacrosse, founded by lacrosse great Casey Powell, focuses on the game’s fundamentals with a format that provides fast “3 vs. 3” play. In order to participate, the only thing a player needs is a lacrosse stick. Speed Lacrosse encourages participation by anyone, reducing barriers to entry and making lacrosse more accessible.

Registration for individuals and teams is now open at CourageGame.org. Sign up now to “play fast with purpose” in New England on September 23.

More About The Courage Game

The Courage Game is a 501c3 charitable organization with a mission to encourage and support gay youth, rebuke bullying, and promote wider education and awareness for LGBT equality. Donations and all other funds raised go directly to supporting the work to spread our mission, impact lives, and bring inclusivity to all youth sports. Watch ESPN’s SC Featured special on The Courage Game here.

The Courage Game originated when a young, gay lacrosse player, Braeden Lange, was struggling with the burden of acceptance amongst his peers. While his parents were accepting Braeden struggled with friends at school until he reached out to a player he admired, Andrew Goldstein, who had come out as a student athlete at Dartmouth College. Soon after reaching out to Andrew, Braeden witnessed something magical as fellow players from all over the world began to contact him, show support, and share their own stories. This experience encouraged Braeden to conquer the challenges he faced and ignited the idea for the Courage Game.

I feel so confident in who I am and almost unstoppable because I’ve had so many people standing with me and encouraging me to be myself. I still fit in, I’m still the same person.

– Braeden Lange following the first Courage Game in 2015.

Today, the Courage Game has evolved to be much more than a single day of lacrosse. As a registered charitable organization, it collects donations year round to support its mission to encourage and support gay youth, rebuke bullying, and promote wider education and awareness for LGBT equality. All funds raised directly support the work to spread the mission, impact lives, and bring inclusivity to all youth sports.

Courage Game co-founder and executive director Nick Welton has been inspired by the impact of the Courage Game:

This experience has grown to be a real movement for young people. To be able to provide an outlet and a support system for the next generation of athletes, regardless of their situation, has meant so much to us. We look forward to seeing the Courage Game grow to include other sports and opportunities for inclusive activities.

Courage Game partners include Lacrosse All Stars, Nike Lacrosse, NXT Sports, Speed Lacrosse, and the You Can Play Project.
