Alphabetical 2014 NCAA D1 Preview: St. John’s

The NCAA D1 season is now underway! During the first couple of weeks of lacrosse season we’ll be finishing up the Alphabetical 2014 NCAA D1 Previews! Like last year, we are going through all of the D1 men’s teams for 2014 (there are 67 this year!) and we are now moving on to the St. John’s Red Storm, located in Queens, NY.

SJU went 8-7 in 2012, and that was their first winning season since they brought the program back in 2005. 2013 saw the team take another giant leap as they finished 9-5. That was the team’s second most wins in a season ever. 2014 has SJU bringing back some serious talent and a Tewaaraton Award candidate in senior attackman Kieran McArdle. Kevin Cernuto and Colin Keegan also return at attack, and that trio will lead the way for St. John’s offensively, as they did last year, totaling 164 points (85 of those came from McArdle).

Connor Mullen, Ryan Fitzgerald, Keith Switzer, and James Bonnano should lead the midfield this year after good years in 2013. Between the seven offensive players listed so far, many are seniors. Leadership should be a strength for the Red Storm this year, especially on O. Jordan Rothman took a lot of the draws last year but has since graduated. Mario Carrera could step into that vacated spot.

Defensively, St. John’s brings back solid experience as well. Joe Addona, Drew Viscusi, and Mark DiFrangia return as starters down low, and while Jeff Lowman is gone in goal, Harry Burke saw some good time last year as a freshman, proving he can play when Lowman was injured. Chris Fisher Jr should be a solid force at LSM. I’m interested to see if versatile freshman Kyle Skramko can make his way onto the field for added depth.

St. John’s returns a LOT of talent this year, and with McArdle on the roster it makes them a very dangerous team both in and out of conference. Keep your eyes on St. John’s this year… they senior heavy, can score goals, and should have a solid defense. That’s upset material right there, and it makes their selection as the #2 team in the Big East a lot easier to understand.
