Finding The Humor

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen!

I’ve found that it’s very difficult to be angry or upset with a smile. When I was young, and upset – frowning or crying – my father would alsways say, “I wish you could see your face right now!” and half the time he’d be laughing at me. In truth, that rarely did anything to help the situation. But when I first started teaching, I figured out what he meant. I would look at some of the faces that my students made when they were upset with me, and I’d do everything I could to keep from cracking up. It (usually) wasn’t that their anger was funny to me. It was that in that very moment, I understood what my father was talking about. And if they could see the faces they made, they couldn’t help but laugh. At one point, I brought a handheld mirror to class with me, for just such an occasion. The results were priceless! In fact, sometimes just trying to convince them to actually look at themselves in the mirror was enough to defuse the situation.

I DARE YOU(!) to look at a mirror and try to make whatever you think your angriest face is, and to do it without cracking up. And once you realize what you look like in that moment, try to recall it when you’re really angry. It may not make the situation better, but I bet it’ll settle you enough to figure out what you need to do to get back on track. As Bill Cosby once said, “You can turn painful situations around through laughter. If you can find humor in anything, even poverty, you can survive it.” Find the humor in your less than humorous moments. It’s probably there if you’re willing to laugh at it.

Make it a GREAT day!

Stay blessed.
