Wooden Stick Exposition In Syracuse

On September 28th and 29th, Syracuse University, in association with the Onondaga Historical Association (OHA) and Skä-noñh—Great Law of Peace Center, will put on the first ever Haudenosaunee Wooden Stick Lacrosse Expo. The event, which will be free, and open to the public, will take place at Onondaga Lake Park in Liverpool.

The Expo will feature wooden-stick exhibition games, as well as clinics put on by players from the Iroquois Nationals, Onondaga Redhawks lacrosse teams and perhaps others. There will be live stick-making demos, Native American arts and craft displays, live entertainment, and food and apparel vendors, all on site.

The Expo will open at 8:30AM with an opening ceremony, and then clinics, demos, games, and much more fill the rest of the days. The Expo will conclude with a closing ceremony on Sunday evening at 5pm.

We will definitely have someone at the Expo to cover the event, and I’m thinking about making the trip up to Cuse myself. It will be very interesting to see the final format of the exhibition games, and how close the games will come to resembling the way the Creator’s Game used to be played, and is still played by some.

I doubt we will see a true medicine game, as that is a sacred ritual and event within the community, but we may see a game on a longer field, with more players, and with no padding. I’m not sure what it will be, and that’s part of the reason I want to go. What can I say? I’m intrigued.

If you’ll be in the Syracuse area on September 28th and 29th, you might consider heading on over to this park in Liverpool. I don’t know what to expect exactly, but I get the feeling that I’ll learn a lot about the game and my Native brothers and sisters no matter what. That makes it worth it right there!
