No Upsets? That’s Weird. NCAA D1 Rundown

Ok, so NO UPSETS may be a bit harsh, but despite several close calls, this week was mostly upset free. Sure, Bryant beat Brown in a littlest in-state rivalry game, but who didn’t see that coming? s OK, I know nobody outside of Smithfield, RI saw that coming, but still, this week was rather tame compared to the rest of the season up to this point.

There are still going to be some shakeups in the polls, so make sure to check out Connor’s picks over here as well.

The D1 Stat Freaks

Freak of the Week: Dylan Molloy. I know, he always puts up big numbers, but what made this week so special? Well, he turned around from their first loss of the season during the week (where he had a single goal and five assists) to put up eight goals (on only nine shots!) and three assists for 11 points. If we take it a step further, he had one shot that was not on goal, meaning he scored on every single shot he took when Molloy was on cage. I don’t think he likes losing.

Offense: The Cutoff here is a combined 7 goals and/or assists

Brown’s Dylan Molloy 8G, 3A, 9 shots vs. Penn
Mount St. Mary’s Chris DiPretoro 6G, 1A vs. Bucknell
Hobart’s Chris Aslanian 5G, 2A vs. Robert Morris
Marquette’s Andy DeMichiei 7G vs. St. John’s
Bryant’s Tucker James 6G, 7A vs. Wagner
Canisius’ Jeff Edwards 3G, 4A vs. Manhattan
Quinnipiac’s Brian Feldman 5G, 3A vs. Detroit

Defense:  For here, you need 8 GBs, CTs, and/or points

Bryant’s Chas South 6GB, 2CT vs. Brown
Brown’s Larken Kemp 8GB, 4CT, 1G vs. Bryant
Yale’s Christopher Keating 5GB, 4CT vs. Dartmouth
Yale’s Jerry O’Connor 4GB. 4CT vs. Sacred Heart
Bucknell’s Alex Spring 8GB vs. Mount St. Mary’s
Princeton’s Zach Currier 7GB, 2CT, 2G, 1A vs. Stony Brook
Nova’s John Moderski 8GB, 2CT vs. Denver
BU’s Greg Wozniak 8GB, 6CT vs. Army
Drexel’s Miles Thomas 5GB, 3CT vs. Fairfield

The Big Upsets and Surprises

  • Yale coasted to an easy pair of victories by a combined score of 34-8, which was a nice change of pace coming off of a pair of one goal games. They have to buckle right back down again though, as they face two very tough tests in Brown and Albany before facing Harvard. An undefeated regular season is almost in their grasp, but it will not be easy. A win against Brown means the Ivy tournament probably goes through New Haven.
  • 2-8 Furman made things really interesting for Richmond in a tight SoCon battle. The Spiders pulled out the win in three overtimes to stay perfect in conference play. Richmond has another good test against Bellarmine next before a huge showdown with Air Force the following week. Those two are the main contenders for the SoCon’s NCAA bid.
  • Princeton once against played another good team close in Stony Brook, but just couldn’t quite seal the win. With a rough off the field week for the Tigers, a win could have really helped heal some wounds. Instead, they have a pair of games this week before closing out their season against Harvard and Cornell. This is certainly not the season for Princeton most had anticipated back in February.
  • Speaking of close games, Denver travelled east to face Villanova is a snow-filled game that had the Pioneers yearning for the warm, sunny, Rocky Mountains. Villanova almost got the upset, but Denver was just too much and came away with the one point win.
  • Enough of close games, how about Army vs. Boston University? The Patriot league loves to not make sense, and this game definitely did not make sense. Boston has been emerging as a Patriot contender while Army continues to fly just slightly under the national radar (sorry, military puns are too fun). But Boston losing by 11 at home? Really?
  • The real story of the weekend for Johns Hopkins was the return of Head Coach Dave Pietramala to the sideline after a prolonged health scare. His team rewarded him with a last second defensive stand over Ohio State who gave the Jays everything they could handle. Ohio State had two opportunities in the final seconds, but Hopkins showed why it’s so important to not play timid with the game on the line. They contested a pass, forced the ball out, and calmly killed the last few seconds in clearing mode.
  • Sunday started with a superb matchup between Duke and Notre Dame. It was by no means high scoring, and neither team really had the opportunity to build a lead. Notre Dame’s defense just wore down Duke while the Irish attack found just enough openings to get the win. Neither team had an easy time of it or seemed like they were in control for long periods of time. The person who struggled the most in that game was probably sideline reporter Quint Kessenich, trying to interview a youth player in the crowd during a break. Let’s just say Quint was probably thrilled to interview Irish head Coach Kevin Corrigan after the game knowing he would give much more than just once word responses.
  • In another ACC battle, UNC and UVA faced off and it was the Tar Heels that dominated from start to finish. This really sets up an interesting scenario in the ACC now. UNC will be in the conference tournament regardless of how their game next week in Syracuse goes. Virginia on the other hand absolutely must win against Duke next week. Wins by Virginia and Syracuse set up a tie for 4th between UVA and Duke, sending the Hoos onto the ACC tournament and the Blue Devils to face Brown. A win by UVA and UNC would setup a three way tie between Duke, UVA, and Cuse. Cuse beat UVA, UVA will have beaten Duke, and Duke beat Cuse. I’m sure there are some great tiebreaker procedures out there, but let’s just hope those teams make it easy on us.
  • The nightcap of the week was Penn State and Maryland. Penn State has been on the brink all year of making a big jump in the national standings, and a win here would have done it when coupled with their previous win over Denver. They played Maryland close all game and it eventually went into overtime to be decided. The win has Maryland tied with Rutgers for first in the B1G, while Penn State is with Hopkins at 1-1 in conference. With Ohio State and Michigan winless in the conference so far, this is looking more and more like a 4 team race.  The conference championship will matter to all four teams who participate.

There was almost no movement on this table this week as most teams are focusing on their conference play right now, so wins and losses wash each other out. The Patriot moved up a few spots and is just a single out of conference win behind the Ivy. Keep this table in mind as more and more people start predicting possible brackets for the NCAA tournament.

Considering how unlikely it looks right now for many, if any, of the conference favorites to win their conference’s automatic qualifier in a tournament, things like strength of schedule are going to become increasingly important. The Southern and America East teams both have had multiple ranked teams, but there will likely be some question marks when that NCAA field gets announced.
