The President’s Cup tournament is Canada’s National Championship for Senior ‘B’ Box Lacrosse. The national summer sport of Canada has been full-throttle since Sunday and continues to September 2, when a national champion will hoist the President’s Cup. Nanaimo Timbermen – 14, Saskatoon Brewers – 11
This was fun. The game found itself knotted at 5-5 and 6-6, followed by a run for each team. Unfortunately for the Brew Crew, the home team’s run championed by Shires and Diplock buried the Brewers. It’s important to mention that the Brewers never gave up and never stopped hustling. Nanaimo was coming off a letdown loss to Caughnawaga on opening night, and the Timbermen looked much more comfortable in their own skin with this team win.
St. Albert Miners – 7, Capital Region Axemen – 5
This was a great game of box lacrosse, even with neither team achieving double digits. A tied score of 2-2 after the second period was a precursor to a raucous third period filled with big saves, power play goals, and a myriad of penalties. Slick offensive work by Kegan Bal broke the stalemate, and the Miners once again stood behind the wall of Aaron Bold in cage. The offensive talent of Aaron Foster was on full display, as Foster notched all five for the Axemen. The Miners of Alberta handed the Quebec team their second loss in as many days, and are living up to the expectations of being a contender for the three-peat.
Caughnawaga Indians – 9, Ladner Pioneers – 8
Game of the week so far. The lead didn’t change hands too many times, but if I’m not mistaken was tied at 2-2, 4-4, 6-6 and 8-8 before Blaze Riorden notched the game winner. We were treated to outstanding goaltending from both Brandon Miller and Brodie MacDonald who combined for at least a zillion saves. A last second shot from the Ladner Pioneers that could have tied the game did hit Miller before going in, but to the dismay of Ladner, the buzzer sounded prior and thus no-goal was the call of the official. Caughnawaga didn’t make too many fans opening night, as they upset the home team, but have since become one of the more popular teams with local fans. Ladner sits at 1-1, and this loss is not necessarily the end of the road in a tournament like this.
Nanaimo Timbermen – 15, Onondaga Redhawks – 11
This game followed suit of the prior three games, as Onondaga and Nanaimo put on quite the show in front of an impressive home crowd at the Frank Crane Arena. Onondaga put up a great fight, but all of their scoring runs were just chasing after the Timbermen. A busy night in the penalty box for both teams gave the crowd plenty of offensive fireworks with some broken plays and shorthanded goals. Onondaga’s Josh Becker led the way scoring for Onondaga, while seven of Jordan Cunningham’s nine points were assists. Nanaimo picked up two wins today, the best possible result from 120 minutes of lacrosse in one day. I don’t think we’ve seen Onondaga’s best performance yet this week, and I think we’ll see the Redhawks rise to the challenge and ruin someone’s day in the near future.
Oakville Titans – 11, Saskatoon Brewers – 4
We had a slightly sloppier game to end the night. I believe that both teams put the pedal to the medal early, with the Brew Crew playing earlier this morning and Oakville topping Onondaga late last night. The result was a mess of a game, with both goalies being subjected to a lot of broken situations and solo shooters. Both net minders were up to the task on many occasions, but too many missed opportunities resulted in points off of turnovers. That was all she wrote for Saskatoon. Both teams will be challenged to recover and come out looking fresher tomorrow than they did today.
