SPIRE Academy Lacrosse Program

SPIRE Academy is a specialized academic institution focused on inspiring the best expression of the human spirit through athletics, academics, and service to others. The high school features a world class 750,000 sqft facility on over 500 acres of land located in Geneva, Ohio. It is the training location for Olympians and World Champions. SPIRE’s coaches/ambassadors are Olympians, World Champions, Gold Medalists, and record holders. SPIRE Academy is focused on developing high school athletes to be ready to compete at the collegiate level while learning leadership traits on top of gaining an impactful education.

The lacrosse program at SPIRE Academy is coached by Lelan Rogers. Rogers was a three-sport college athlete at St. Lawrence University excelling at football, wrestling, and lacrosse. His love for lacrosse would lead him to Syracuse University where he took faceoffs for the Orange while finishing his Bachelor of Science in Speech Communications. Rogers would then become a Graduate Assistant at Syracuse for two years while pursuing his Masters in Higher Education Athletic Administration. Following his time at Syracuse, Rogers became the Head Coach at Ohio Wesleyan University from 1990-1999 then the Head Coach at Cortland State University from 2000-2006. Rogers ranks as one of the top head coaches nationally, as his .787 winning percentage (185-50) still ranks 14th all-time of any collegiate coach at any level.

In 2006, Rogers became the Director of Lacrosse Operations at Syracuse University before becoming an assistant coach the following year where he remained a member of the coaching staff up until 2021. As Syracuse’s Defensive Coordination, Rogers led the Orange to two national championships in 2008 and 2009 and has coached 17 different defensive players to earn a combined 31 defensive All-Americans at Syracuse. His defensive units have ranked in the top five nationally in score defense three times (2009-2011), top-15 six times, and in the top three of their league in 10 of the 12 seasons since Syracuse joined a conference in 2010.

Roger’s motivation to come to SPIRE Academy was centered around his desire to help influence specialized lacrosse athletes at a younger stage.

“At the high school level, you are at the beginning of a lacrosse player’s stages, and you can help develop high school kids’ character and leadership skills a little bit more than when they get to college…the earlier you can get around the player the more influence you can have.”
– Lelan Rogers, SPIRE Lacrosse Head Coach

A major point of emphasis that Rogers is instilling at SPIRE Academy is making sure that his players are truly learning the game and understanding concepts of the game at an earlier age. He looks to give his players the tools and resources to understand every aspect of the game at a deeper level to make sure they are more developed academically, individually, and tactically to promote future success at the collegiate level. Rogers is aware that most students that come to SPIRE Academy are looking to play lacrosse after high school which is one of the main selling points of the program. Rogers is able to tailor a specialized high school lacrosse experience for students who are passionate about elevating their game to new heights. Only at SPIRE Academy will you be surrounded by other elite high school athletes from across country who all have the common goal of playing collegiate lacrosse.

The school is not a traditional high school or prep school as SPIRE Academy is specifically built for academics and development. Academics are spread out throughout the day unlike traditional high schools that only offer classes within a set timeframe and SPIRE classes are more focused on the student’s interest of studies. Five hours of academics are followed by four hours of athletics featuring a two-hour traditional lacrosse practice along with performance sessions focused on lifting and nutrition. Students will live on campus from August to May with the summers off to return home.

SPIRE Academy’s lacrosse program looks to begin competition September of 2022 and aims to have 20-25 players on the roster for its inaugural season. Rogers is looking for students who are passionate about lacrosse and looking to take their game to the next level. On top of a student’s ability on the field, Rogers wants to make sure his players take care of their academics, have high character, and good leadership abilities. The program looks to be competitive out of the gate scheduling local prep schools along with distinguished public schools in the area. Rogers hopes to have a prep team, varsity team, and JV team within the next five years.
