The year was 1985, and the Philadelphia Spectrum was playing host to the IBLA Exhibition Series between the US and Canada. This series pitted the best US box players against the best that Canada had to offer and the guys on both rosters served as a who’s who of lacrosse in the mid 80s. This event was also called the North American Cup, and was a very cool concept.
Welcome to another superb Throwback Thursday! This week we’ve got some NCAA D1 semifinal action from 1990! It was UNC taking on Syracuse, and while Cuse had the big guns and names (Maracheck, Paul and Gary Gait, Pat McCabe, Matt Palumb), UNC wasn’t going down without a fight!
Way back in 1991 CBS Sports was covering the NCAA D1 Men’s Lacrosse Championship. They thought it would be a good idea to showcase Jim Brown, the lacrosse player, at halftime. They were wrong… it was a GREAT idea! Lax School brings you the full segment on Jim Brown’s days on the lacrosse field for Syracuse University in this MUST SEE video!
Last week we had UNC vs UVA for the whole enchilada that was 1986. This week, we’re going two days further back in time to see how UNC made it to the finals. How’d they do it? They knocked off legendary Johns Hopkins, that’s how!
UNC edged Johns Hopkins 10-9 in OT in one semifinal, and Virginia took down Syracuse 12-10 in the other semifinal. This was the first year where semifinal games were played at neutral sites. Coincidence? Probably, but a neat historical note either way. This was also the first time two schools from the same conference faced off for a D1 title.
Today’s Throwback Thursday post focuses on Dave Pietramala, and we’re using a 1989 NCAA Semifinal game between Johns Hopkins and UNC to demonstrate his straight up dominance. Petro is now the head coach at Hop, but he was also a terror with a longstick on the field during his playing days. He drew the top assignment, and then made them pay.
Lax School has been killing it with old videos thanks to Billy Daye, Bill Millman, and Randy Fraser. These guys have stacks of VHS being converted to YouTube videos, and their most recent unveiling, of the 1992 Vail Finals, is another gem.
The NLL has been uploading video highlights to Youtube. We have been searching through them and posting them on LAS. Its for the people. Come on through to check out the lacrosse highlights and get a little commentary on the side!
Lacrosse players at Dominican University aren’t afraid to wear tights. In fact, they prefer to sing while wearing them.
