Throwback Thursday: UNC Vs Hop 1986

Last week we had UNC vs UVA for the whole enchilada that was 1986. This week, we’re going two days further back in time to see how UNC made it to the finals. How’d they do it? They knocked off legendary Johns Hopkins, that’s how!

Throwback Thursday: 1986 UNC-UVA

UNC edged Johns Hopkins 10-9 in OT in one semifinal, and Virginia took down Syracuse 12-10 in the other semifinal. This was the first year where semifinal games were played at neutral sites. Coincidence? Probably, but a neat historical note either way. This was also the first time two schools from the same conference faced off for a D1 title.

Throwback Thursday: 1991 UNC – Towson

It’s 1991, you’re in Syracuse, NY at the Carrier Dome, and you’re watching Towson vs UNC on CBS Sports. Yup, back in the early 90s, D1 lacrosse was broadcast on CBS. Talk about mainstream!

Throwback Thursday: Cortland vs. Hartwick 1989

At the :30 second mark of the video a Hartwick player stuffs a shot, fights for a GB, and then gets wrestled down to the ground. Today, parents and fans would be up in arms, and screaming for a penalty. There is a little bit of that in the audio, but a solid number of chuckles can also be heard. It was all part of the game back then, even if it was a little bit ugly!

salmonbellies_vs_the_world_lacrosse_book

Throwback Thursday: D3 Dreaming

This week’s Throwback Thursday is all about D3 love and our premier video showcases Cortland State vs Ohio Wesleyan in a 1989 barn burner! Goals on goals… just the way we like it!

Throwback Thursday: The Legendary Etienne Woodie

There are a lot of really nice old wooden sticks out there, and there are a number of stick makers who do fantastic work. Alf Jacques and Mitchell Brothers are two men who still make wonderful sticks today, but back in the day an Etienne Martin was another gem, and if you can find one of these oldies, scoop it up!

Throwback Thursday: USA – Canada 1990 Video

usa_canada_lacrosse_1990

The lacrosse world championships traveled down under to Perth, Australia in 1990 but playing in the Southern Hemisphere didn’t do much to change the pecking order for national teams. Canada and the US obviously matched up for a great game and the video picks up the play with the US up 5-2 early in the second quarter.

Throwback Thursday: 1980s Adelphi Lacrosse

Adelphi Photo credit: Larry Palumbo 10 30 2013

Gordon Purdie is the Head Coach at NCAA D2 Adelphi, and a YouTube user with the same name uploaded a great video featuring Adelphi Lacrosse from the 1980s. We can only assume it’s the same guy! Either way, the video is awesome, and well worth a watch or two.

Throwback Thursday: The Original No. 22

Jimmy Lewis is, in my humble opinion, the greatest lacrosse player I know of. I had the luck and honor of being coached by his brother, John Lewis (an Adelphi legend himself) back in high school, so I may be perpetually biased when it comes to holding the Lewis family in such high regard.

TBT: The Best One-Two Punch In College Lacrosse

Back in 1998, Sports Illustrated published an article profiling brothers Casey Powell and Ryan Powell as they led Syracuse University toward another successful lacrosse season. The article, written by Seth Davis and published in the May 5th issue, provides a great insider’s look at how both brothers inevitably came together to play at Syracuse and chase their […]

Throwback Thursday: 1975 New Jersey Lacrosse

Welcome to Throwback Thursday! Corey Robert sent in this great video featuring some high school lacrosse in New Jersey from 1975! Corey’s dad was the goalie for Boonton in the above game where they played Montclair from the State Championship. Montclair won in 1975, and Boonton took the title in 1976, with Mr. Robert still in goal.
