Tennessee Wesleyan 2019 Season Summary

Editor’s Note: Welcome to our NAIA lacrosse season-in-review series. Each day for the next month or so, we will be recapping last NAIA season in advance for the 2020 season. Today, we are looking at Tennessee Wesleyan.

2019 Tennessee Wesleyan Review

A 5-9 record may seem like a down year for the bulldogs, but when looking closer things look a little bit bleaker. Of the five wins from last year, two were actually forfeited wins against Asbury and Concordia (a game they lost which was later forfeited). Wins against Point and Columbia College were expected. The best win of the season came against St.Ambrose. All that being said TWU was able to finish the year strong, a point they made by taking Cumberlands to OT in the AAC semi-finals.

Key Losses

Ian Gonzalez shouldered a majority of the face-off duties while making solid contributions on offense (29 points, 47% faceoff winning percentage). Roderick Williams will be missed the most on offense, having scored 53 points in his senior campaign.

2020 Tennessee Wesleyan Outlook

Patrick DeMoss returns in net. He was limited to eight games last season, but appeared to be solid in the goal hovering around a 50 percent save percentage. The offense will be lead by Stanton Grisham (20 goals, eight assists) and Jaylan Steen (21 goals, 15 assists). As a team they need to fill-in depth on defense and find a consistent faceoff man, as they finished last season under 45 percent as a unit.

Way Too Early Prediction

Losses to graduation were limited, and with strong pieces returning, a proper face-off unit and more consistent offensive production I expect TWU to win 4-5 games. However, with the addition of SCAD to the AAC, I don’t see the bulldogs making the conference semi-finals this year.
