Alphabetical 2013 NCAA D1 Preview: Lafayette

We’re breaking down all the NCAA D1 teams one by one. Welcome to the Alphabetical 2013 NCAA D1 Previews! We move another spot down the list and the Lafayette Leopards, located in Easton, PA, are up for Preview!

The 2012 season started out ok for Lafayette, but quickly spiraled out of control. After going 2-1 with wins over Providence and Wagner (and a loss to Binghamton), The Leopards would go on to lose seven straight games. A rebound win over Holy Cross helped, but then Lafayette played their two toughest games of the year in Colgate and Lehigh, and lost both by a combined 21 goals.

2013 doesn’t get any easier. Lafayette will play their Patriot League schedule, but will also face Georgetown, Stony Brook, Manhattan, Wagner, Marist, Delaware, and High Point. There are a couple of winnable games, but most will be stiff contests.

Lafayette, quite simply, needs to score more goals. The Leopards only scored 10 goals or more 3 times all of last year, and one of those was an OT loss. Thankfully, Brian Brock and Cory Scheurle are both back at attack as sophomores. Brock and Scheurle were the two leading scores in 2012, but the next four top scorers are all gone. Sonny Round also returns to round out the attack unit.

Mac Asher (defense), Jake Asher (goalie), and Matt Evans (defense) also returns for the Leopards, and having some continuity on defense should certainly help the young offense. If Greg Rau can have a big year facing off as a senior, Lafayette could be ok.

The Leopards have a solid, young offensive core, which is a good start towards climbing the ladder. If Lafayette wants to get back to the success they saw in 2010 (where they went 8-6), they will need their young guys to step up, and their more veteran defense to lead the way.
