Game Photos: Cortland Tops Stevens In OT

Cortland State and Stevens Tech were in Virginia Beach last night for a NCAA D3 Lacrosse game, and as many expected, this #1 vs #4 match up delivered in a major way. It was a back and forth, well-played game, which required overtime to determine a winner.

Stevens and Cortland were tied at 2 goals a piece after a quarter of play, and then Stevens turned the pressure up with a 4-2 2nd quarter win, to go up 6-4 at the half. Cortland battled back in the third quarter, outscoring Stevens 5-3, to tie the game up 9 heading into the fourth. Both teams put up 2 goals in the final period to force overtime.

With under 2 minutes remaining in OT, Cortland’s Doug Meehan gained control of the ball, and pushed transition, notching his only goal of the contest, to win the game for the Red Dragons.

Cortland was led by Joe Slavik (3-1-4) and Zach Hopps (1-3-4) who each notched four points on the day. Matt Rakoczy (3-0-3), Benjamin Dunlavey (2-1-3), Mike Cantelli (2-0-2), and Cody Consul (0-2-2) all chipped in with big points. Mike Kaminski made 9 saves in net for the win.

Stevens got great scoring from Harrison Dorne (4-1-5) and Rich Dupras (3-2-5), who each tallied five points on the day. Nick Phillipi went 2-1, Charlie Cronin added two goals, and Michael Maroon had an assist. Matt Deiner made ten big saves for Stevens, almost leading the Ducks to victory.

Both teams went 2-6 on man up opportunities, and Cortland dominated on face offs, winning 20 out of 26. Stevens held a slight edge in turnovers and forced turnovers, and was the better clearing team, but the Red Dragons held leads in GBs and shots, and eventually won the game.

Cortland’s next game is at Cabrini on March 16th. Cabrini is 3-2 and just knocked off a very good Gettysburg team. Cortland currently sits at 4-0. Stevens drops to 5-1, and they host Tufts on March 16th. Tufts recently lost to Hamilton and Conn College, but they did so with only about 20 players. Over 20 other players were suspended for those two games. If there was ever a time when a 5-1 team needed to be on “upset alert” facing an 0-2 team, this would be it.
